Campgrounds and RV parks near Salem, IL

Water recreation drives most trips. The recreation area at Stephen A. Forbes supports fishing, boating, and wildlife watching along its wooded shoreline, with a stocked lake known for catfish, bluegill, and bass. Two sets of stairways and a boat dock provide access to the lake for campers, and a 120-foot floating walkway connects the campground with the marina area. Carlyle Lake, reached via Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area, is one of the Midwest's most popular sailing lakes. The park offers over 9 miles of hiking trails, three free public boat ramps, a 40-acre harbor with electric hoists, fish cleaning stations, and an accessible fishing pier at Allen Branch. Families find playgrounds, swimming areas, and picnic shelters at both state recreation areas. Salem itself provides grocery stops, fuel, and restaurants within easy reach of every campground on this list.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. The best time to visit is during the warmer months, from April to October, when the weather is ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and boating, and this is when state-park sites see the heaviest demand. Summer weekends around Carlyle Lake fill fast, driven in part by sailing events on the lake. Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area operates on a seasonal camping schedule, typically running from mid-spring through late fall, so shoulder-season visits are possible but amenities may be reduced. A public swimming pool with zero entry operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day at Eldon Hazlet, and the campground store runs on a similar summer schedule. Winter is cold and quiet. Snowfall in southern Illinois is generally light, but freezing temperatures, closed water lines, and reduced services mean most RV renters plan trips between April and October. Fall brings cooler nights, lower crowds, and reliable foliage in the wooded loops.

Public campgrounds in this area lean toward Class A sites with electric and water hookups rather than full sewer, so plan for dump-station stops. Oak Ridge Campground at Stephen A. Forbes is big-rig friendly with pull-through sites and offers hookup options including 30-amp electrical and water connections, and a dump station is on-site. Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet has 328 Class A campsites with 30 and 50 amp electrical hookups, and 36 Class C campsites for walk-in tent camping, plus three shower buildings, playground equipment, basketball and sand volleyball courts, and public laundry facilities. Sites at both state areas are generally spacious and well-shaded under mature trees, though privacy varies by loop. Some visitors note that campground sections aren't well marked, especially when arriving after dark, so plan an early arrival. Private parks near Salem tend to offer full hookups and easier highway access, which suits shorter overnight stops.
