Campgrounds and RV parks near Sandoval, IL

Carlyle Lake anchors most trip planning in the area. The 26,000-acre reservoir supports boating, sailing, and fishing for white bass, channel catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass, and Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area alone offers more than nine miles of hiking trails, three public boat ramps, a 40-acre harbor, and an accessible fishing pier at Allen Branch. A campground store and public swimming pool operate near the Illini Campground during the warm season. For families staying at Archway RV Park in Mount Vernon, an on-site fishing pond, playground, and dog park sit within the campground, and the surrounding area includes shopping, restaurants, and family attractions. St. Louis is roughly an hour west, which makes day-trip zoo, museum, and Gateway Arch visits realistic from any base in the Sandoval area.

The core camping season in south-central Illinois runs from mid-April through late October. Timber Trails Campground follows this pattern directly, opening April 1 and closing November 15, while the Illini Campground at Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area stays open year-round. Archway RV Park and Cedarbrook Campground also operate year-round, though winter amenities scale back and the pool at Eldon Hazlet only runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Late spring and early summer bring warm, humid weather and the wettest stretch of the year for the region. Summer weekends, holiday weekends, and the sailboat regattas held nearly every summer weekend on Carlyle Lake drive the highest demand for reservable sites. Fall cools quickly through October and delivers the most comfortable RV weather with lower humidity and fewer bugs. Winter is cold with periodic snow and freezing overnight lows, so travelers heading out in December through February should confirm water service and heated bathhouse availability before booking.

Private parks in the area lean toward gravel pull-throughs with full water, sewer, and electric hookups, level pads suitable for big rigs, and a mix of nightly guests and long-term seasonal campers. Archway RV Park offers pull-through sites large enough for big RVs plus cabins, and Timber Trails Campground has long pull-throughs and a swimming pool, with many seasonal residents on site. Cedarbrook Campground offers full-hookup pull-throughs and water-and-electric back-ins, with a portion of the property occupied by seasonal residents. Eldon Hazlet is a state park experience: shaded gravel pads, three shower buildings, a dump station near the entrance, a campground store stocking groceries, ice, firewood, and bait, and most sites within easy reach of Carlyle Lake. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the region, and interstate access means groceries and fuel are never far from any of these campgrounds.
