Camping near Smithton, Illinois
Smithton sits in St. Clair County in southwestern Illinois, roughly 20 miles southeast of downtown St. Louis. The village works well as a quiet RV base for exploring the Metro East, the Mississippi River corridor, and the mound-country history that defines this stretch of the state.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. American Legion Freedom Farm and Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park sit closest, offering rural, river-adjacent stays. Cahokia RV Parque and Safari RV Park provide fuller-service parks on the St. Louis side of the region, while DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park puts rigs directly across the river from the Gateway Arch. Camping options near Smithton spread across a roughly 45-mile radius that includes both Illinois and Missouri destinations, with a mix of private RV parks and state recreation areas across terrain that transitions from the Mississippi River floodplain to gently rolling uplands to the east.
At its peak around 1100, Cahokia stretched over 4,000 acres and encompassed about 120 earthen mounds, and the site anchors the region's heritage tourism. Carlyle Lake, the largest lake wholly within Illinois, and several state recreation areas lie within about an hour's drive.
Things to do around Smithton
History and outdoor recreation anchor most trips. At Cahokia Mounds, visitors can walk among 70 preserved earthen mounds and climb a stairway to the top of Monks Mound, alongside a reconstructed stockade wall and the Woodhenge sun-calendar circle. A 6.2-mile Nature/Culture Trail passes through wetland, forest, and grassland environments, and a mile-long Prairie State Nature Walk features flora and fauna of the area.
St. Louis attractions sit just across the Mississippi: the Gateway Arch, the zoo in Forest Park, and the riverfront. The historic Chain of Rocks Bridge has been renovated as a mile-long pedestrian and bike crossing, connecting into the Riverfront Trail toward the Arch.
Closer to Smithton, families can fish and boat on Kaskaskia River access points, hike at Frank Holten and nearby state recreation areas, and drive out to Carlyle Lake for a full day on the water.

Southwestern Illinois has four distinct seasons. Spring brings green-up and the region's wettest stretch, with frequent thunderstorms rolling through from March into May. It is a strong shoulder season for camping if travelers watch the radar and pick sites with good drainage.
Summer is the busiest time. Daytime highs typically reach the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit with high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill fastest at state-run campgrounds; reservations for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends require a two-night minimum. Fall cools gradually through September and October, delivering the most comfortable RV weather of the year and lower weekday demand.
Winter is quiet. Some state-park loops reduce services or close from late fall through early spring, and several private RV parks along the river operate on limited winter hours. Travelers arriving between December and February should confirm hookup availability directly with each park.
How to book near Smithton
Private parks near Smithton, including Cahokia RV Parque, Safari RV Park, and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Booking two to four weeks ahead is usually enough outside of holiday weekends and major St. Louis events.
Illinois state-park campsites use a single system. Online reservations for Illinois Department of Natural Resources-hosted camping, cabins, group camps, and shelters are made through the ExploreMoreIL website, paying by Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period, and reservations must be made at least three days before the campsite is needed.
Most campsites may be reserved from May 1 through October 31; some parks accept reservations year-round, and details are shown on the ExploreMoreIL park page.
What to expect
Most private RV parks in the area offer full hookups, paved or gravel pads, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Sites at DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park are urban and secured, with views across the river to the Arch; Cahokia RV Parque sits in a residential-industrial pocket close to the interstate; Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park and American Legion Freedom Farm feel more rural.
State-park loops in the region skew simpler, often with electric-only hookups, shared water fills, and central dump stations rather than sewer at each site. Most campgrounds also hold first-come, first-served sites, and travelers should contact the park directly for availability.
Summer sites should be booked with shade and afternoon storm runoff in mind. Bring mosquito protection near the river bottoms, and expect train and highway noise at parks close to the interstates.
