Camping near Spring Valley, Illinois
Spring Valley sits in the Illinois River Valley in Bureau County, within a short drive of the state's most-visited canyon country. Most RV travelers use the town as a base for Starved Rock State Park near Utica and Matthiessen State Park near Oglesby, both a few miles east. The area is easy to reach off I-80 and I-39, and roads into the parks accommodate travel trailers and Class C rigs.
Campground options range from a large state-run facility with electric sites to private RV parks with fuller hookups. Starved Rock State Park's campground has 133 Class-A Premium campsites with electric hook-up only. Nearby private parks such as Starved Rock Family Campground, Nature's Way RV Park, and Pleasant Creek Campground add pools, laundry, and camp stores for families who want more amenities between hikes.
Horseback riders have their own option at Equestrian - Matthiessen State Park, a first-come, first-served site located west of Route 178 between Route 71 and the Dells Area entrance, limited to riders traveling with horses.
Things to do near Spring Valley
Hiking is the main draw. Starved Rock State Park offers 13 miles of trails and 18 canyons carved by glacial meltwater, with seasonal waterfalls that run strongest in spring and after heavy rain. St. Louis, Wildcat, and French Canyons are among the most photographed stops. Matthiessen State Park has 5 miles of well-marked hiking trails, plus a cascade waterfall reached by a short walk from the Dells Area parking lot.
The Illinois River supports fishing, boating, and paddling, and there is a kayak launch at the Lower Dells. Matthiessen also provides 9 miles of multi-use mountain bike and horseback riding trails, and 6 miles of cross-country ski trails when snow depth allows. A visitor center at Starved Rock covers the park's geology and Native American history.

Filter for RVs listed as four-season or winter-ready, which means heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and a reliable propane furnace. Plan to camp at Starved Rock's West Loop (open all year with 30/50-amp electric) so you can run a small ceramic heater on shore power and conserve propane. Keep a heated drinking-water hose on hand, monitor tank levels to prevent freezing, and stock RV antifreeze for the gray tank. The reward? Frozen waterfalls in Starved Rock's canyons, empty trails, and crisp campfire nights, magical and totally doable.
