Campgrounds near St. Libory, Illinois
St. Libory sits in southwestern Illinois, roughly 40 miles southeast of St. Louis, with public and private campgrounds spread across the surrounding farm country and Kaskaskia River corridor. The closest options are Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park and American Legion Freedom Farm in the immediate area. A short drive south leads to the 1,600-acre World Shooting and Recreational Complex near Sparta, which doubles as one of the largest publicly run campgrounds in the state.
For a quieter state-park stay, Washington County State Recreation Area covers 900 acres in Washington County, Illinois and includes both Lonely Oaks and Shady Rest campgrounds. Together these five properties cover most trip styles, from quick overnight stops to week-long lake stays with an RV rental.
Things to do near St. Libory
Fishing is the anchor activity. Washington County Lake is a stocked fishery with largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, and carp, and two boat ramps launch non-motorized craft and boats with up to 10 horsepower. The Kaskaskia River adds paddling and bank-fishing options close to town.
Shooting sports are the other regional draw. The World Shooting and Recreational Complex offers 120 trap houses stretching 3.5 miles, two sporting clays courses, 24 combination trap and skeet fields, and cowboy action shooting, and it hosts the ATA Grand American Trapshooting Championships each summer. Washington County SRA adds a lake-loop trail and seasonal hunting.
Families also have easy day trips to downtown St. Louis, the Gateway Arch, and the small historic towns along the Mississippi bluffs, all within about an hour of camp.

The main camping season runs April through October. At the World Shooting and Recreational Complex, camping reservations can be made April 1 through Oct. 31, and Washington County SRA follows a similar shoulder-season pattern, with the Shady Rest shower building open April through October.
Summer weekends are the busiest, especially during trap-shooting events at Sparta. The ATA Grand American runs in late July and early August and blacks out general camping reservations at the complex, so plan around that window. Late spring and early fall usually offer the best mix of open facilities, mild weather, and available sites.
Winter is cold and damp, with limited services. Most sites remain accessible for self-contained rigs, but water hookups and bathhouses are typically shut down. Freezing rain and occasional snow can make rural approach roads slippery, so watch forecasts before heading in.
How to book campgrounds near St. Libory
Illinois state-managed sites, including Washington County State Recreation Area and the World Shooting and Recreational Complex, are booked through the state's ExploreMoreIL reservation system, with a 180-day booking window and a minimum three days in advance of arrival. Reservations at the WSRC are accepted for April 1 through October 31.
At the state park, the Shady Rest loop typically fills first because it carries the electric hookups, while Lonely Oaks is used mainly for tent camping. Reserve early for holiday weekends and any date that overlaps a shooting event at Sparta.
Private and community options such as Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park and American Legion Freedom Farm are booked directly with the operator by phone or their own website. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup amperage, and check-in windows before arrival.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Expect a mix of open, sunny sites and shaded loops. At Washington County SRA, Shady Rest has 75 sites with 37 offering 30-amp electric hookups and accommodating RVs up to 40 feet, and each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. A potable water fill and dump station sit at the campground entrance, so bring a fresh-water hose.
The World Shooting and Recreational Complex is a much larger operation on former mine land. Fifty-amp service is available at all 1,001 campsites, and a public shower building offers 20 private stalls, four of them accessible. Sites are open and gravel, better suited to big rigs than to shade seekers.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across the region, and grocery runs are easy in Nashville, Sparta, or Belleville.
