Campgrounds near Stillman Valley, Illinois
Stillman Valley sits in Ogle County in northern Illinois, roughly fifteen miles south of Rockford and within a short drive of the Rock River and Kishwaukee River corridors. The village is small, but the surrounding countryside is thick with private RV parks, state land, and river campgrounds that draw families from Rockford, Chicago's western suburbs, and southern Wisconsin.
Most RV renters base themselves at private resorts such as King's Camp, Lake Louise RV Resort, Blackhawk Valley Campground, and Lake LaDonna Family Campground, all within an easy drive of Stillman Valley. These parks tend to offer full hookups, laundry, and family amenities like pools, playgrounds, and mini golf.
For a state-park option, Lowden State Park sits beside the Rock River just north of Oregon, about a half-hour drive south, and includes the 50-foot concrete statue designed by sculptor Lorado Taft as a tribute to Native Americans and commonly associated with Chief Black Hawk. It is the closest public campground with electric sites and is a common anchor for weekend trips in the area.
Things to do near Stillman Valley
The Rock River and Kishwaukee River drive most outdoor plans. Blackhawk Valley sits inside a secluded valley of the Kishwaukee River and campers can spend the day tubing or canoeing down the Kish, which is too shallow in parts for motorized boats. Lake Louise RV Resort and Lake LaDonna Family Campground add on-site swimming and fishing water for kids who do not want to leave the campground.
At Lowden State Park, families come for river views, hiking, and the Black Hawk statue overlook. The park is known for forests, ravines, and intense undergrowth crossed by carved-out trails, and it draws anglers, hikers, and boaters in summer with cross-country skiing in winter.
Off-site, Rockford adds gardens, riverfront trails, and the Anderson Japanese Gardens, while Oregon and Byron give quick access to small-town restaurants and river-access points.

The private campgrounds around Stillman Valley run on a standard northern-Illinois season. Blackhawk Valley Campground, for example, is open April 15 through October 15, and neighboring resorts follow a similar mid-spring to mid-fall window. Winter camping options for RVs are very limited in this area.
Summer is peak. June through August brings warm days, active river tubing on the Kishwaukee, and the highest booking pressure, especially on holiday weekends and Friday-Saturday nights. Thunderstorms are frequent, so trip planners should watch severe-weather outlooks from the National Weather Service Chicago office.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Spring sites are easier to book but can be wet and muddy, and reviewers note that non-seasonal sites at private parks can hold water after rain. Fall brings color along the Rock River bluffs at Lowden and cooler nights that suit campfires, with most parks closing by mid-October.

How to book
State-park sites and the cabin at Lowden are handled through Illinois DNR's online reservation system. Reservations at Lowden State Park are taken through ExploreMoreIL, and the park also has 38 Class B/S campsites without electricity but with shower access, plus 8 Class D primitive hike-in-only sites. RV renters should book electric sites early for summer weekends.
Private parks each use their own booking channel. Blackhawk Valley Campground takes reservations by phone and online, and other nearby resorts including King's Camp, Lake Louise RV Resort, and Lake LaDonna Family Campground publish availability on their own sites or through third-party campground booking platforms.
For holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, reserve as far ahead as possible, since many sites go to seasonal renters.
What to expect on site
Private resorts in this area lean family-friendly. Blackhawk Valley Campground has more than 130 units in a wooded and secluded area on the Kishwaukee River with mini golf, pedal carts, a playground, weekend activities, and hayrides for the kids. Expect full hookups on many sites, plus laundry, showers, and camp stores stocked for short stays.
Some parks in the area are heavily seasonal, so short-stay RV renters may be placed in pull-through sites rather than the outer perimeter loops used by long-term campers. Sites in the middle pull-throughs can be tight, while the outer edge sites are typically filled with resident campers.
At Lowden State Park, expect a more rustic experience with large shaded loops, vault or bathhouse facilities depending on class, and quieter evenings than at the private resorts. Cell coverage in the river valleys can be spotty, so download maps before arrival.
