Campgrounds and RV parks near Stronghurst, IL

The Mississippi River corridor is the main draw. Delabar State Park offers river fishing, a boat ramp, and shaded trails through oak, birch, and hickory, while Big River State Forest has trails through planted pine and native sand prairie, plus hunting in season. Argyle Lake State Park centers on a 93-acre lake with boating and fishing for bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, and tiger muskie, plus about 5 miles of wooded foot trails through hilly terrain. It is a popular stop for families and birdwatchers. Off-park stops include the historic square in Carthage and the Great River Road scenic byway along the Mississippi. Cyclists can ride quiet county roads or connect to riverfront paths near Oquawka.

The camping season in western Illinois runs primarily from late April through October, though some Illinois state park campgrounds accept reservations year-round. Spring brings wildflowers, migrating waterfowl along the Mississippi flyway, and cool nights that still call for a heated RV. Rivers can run high in April and May, occasionally closing low-lying boat ramps. Summer is the peak booking window. Weekends at Argyle Lake and Delabar fill quickly, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, which require a two- or three-night minimum. Expect hot, humid afternoons, frequent thunderstorms, and heavy mosquito pressure near the river bottoms. Bring screens, repellent, and a shade awning. Fall is arguably the best RV season here. Oak-hickory color peaks in mid-October, humidity drops, and campground occupancy eases after Labor Day. Big River State Forest turns busy again during firearm deer seasons in November. Winter camping is limited: water is shut off to prevent freeze damage, and roads may be snow-covered.

Expect a mix of electric-only state park sites and full-hookup private sites. Illinois state parks in this region generally offer 30-amp electric with centralized water fill stations and dump stations rather than water and sewer at every pad. Cell coverage is inconsistent in river-bottom and forest sites. Roads to campgrounds are paved but narrow, and interior loops at Delabar and Argyle Lake include tight turns and low tree limbs. Drive slowly and scout on foot before backing in. Quiet hours are enforced, and pets must be leashed on all state land. Summer bugs are the most common surprise for first-time visitors. Mosquitoes, ticks, and biting flies are active from May through September, and a screened outdoor room or awning screen makes a noticeable difference in comfort.
