Things to do around Tamaroa
Fishing anchors most trips. Pyramid holds dozens of lakes stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, and all lakes are considered no-wake zones. Washington County Lake adds species including bluegill, largemouth bass, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish and carp, with shore access at many points around the lake.
On land, Pyramid has 16.5 miles of foot and horse trails, which include mountain bike riding, winding through forested hills, plus deer, turkey, and songbird populations for wildlife watchers. Washington County has a roughly seven-mile marked trail that circles the lake, passing majestic trees, wildflowers, and birds. Both parks allow hunting in designated units during posted seasons.
Paddlers can bring canoes or kayaks, and kayaks, canoes and motorboats are available for rental from the concession stand at Washington County.

Peak camping season runs May through September, when both state parks see the heaviest use and Washington County's electric RV sites at Shady Rest fill up on summer weekends. Reserve early for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day; Illinois requires a two-night minimum on those holiday weekends.
Spring brings green-up, active fishing, and pleasant hiking temperatures, though rain is frequent and low-lying trail sections can stay muddy. Summers are warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms; shaded sites at Shady Rest and Lonely Oaks are worth targeting. Fall is often the sweet spot: cooler nights, drier air, and strong color in the hardwood ridges at Pyramid.
Winter camping is possible at Pyramid on a first-come basis, but cold weather may result in the water being shut off and services are reduced park-wide. The Washington County shower block is open from the start of April until the end of October, so plan accordingly if traveling in the shoulder months.

Washington County offers a step up: there are 37 RV friendly sites that all feature either 30 or 50 amp electrical hookups. Each site also has fire rings, BBQ grills and picnic tables, with six water collection points, one dump station, three toilet blocks and one shower block. Lonely Oaks is basic and tent-oriented, while Shady Rest handles the bigger rigs.
