Campgrounds and RV parks near Toledo, IL

Fox Ridge State Park is the main outdoor draw, with hiking trails through steep ravines, fishing on the Embarras River, and picnic shelters. Ridge Lake inside the park is a research fishery and is fished by reservation only. Lake Shelbyville, reached via Sullivan Marina and Campgrounds Resort, offers boating, swimming beaches, and bass, crappie, and muskie fishing across a large Corps of Engineers reservoir. Casey, a short drive east, is known for its collection of oversized roadside attractions and works as an easy afternoon stop from Casey KOA. Charleston and Mattoon add small museums, the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, farmers markets, and casual dining. Cyclists can ride quiet county roads, and paddlers put in on the Embarras River when water levels cooperate.

The core RV season runs from mid-April through late October. Spring brings wildflowers and green-up in the ravines at Fox Ridge, along with variable weather and the state's peak severe-thunderstorm risk from April through June. Trails can be muddy after heavy rain. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon storms. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busiest, especially around Lake Shelbyville, where marina slips and lakeside sites book well in advance. Weekday arrivals are usually easier for last-minute planners. Fall is the most comfortable stretch: cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color that typically peaks in mid to late October. Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Lake Shelbyville generally run from early April through late October, and shower buildings at Fox Ridge State Park close by early November and reopen in mid-spring. Private parks often winterize water systems before hard freezes. Winter camping options are limited, and most water and shower amenities are shut down until spring.

Cell service is generally reliable in and around Toledo, Charleston, and Mattoon, but can drop inside the wooded loops at Fox Ridge State Park and along some Lake Shelbyville shorelines. Download maps and reservations before leaving the highway. Site surfaces are typically gravel or grass. State park loops at Fox Ridge are back-in only with electric hookups, a shared water fill, and a dump station, while private parks are more likely to offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Big rigs should confirm length limits and turning radius when booking wooded state park loops. Summer brings mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers, so bug spray and long pants for evening hikes help. Quiet hours are enforced at state parks, and pets are generally welcome on leash.
