Campgrounds near Trenton, Illinois
Trenton sits in Clinton County in southwestern Illinois, roughly 35 miles east of St. Louis along Interstate 64. The town works well as a base for RV trips centered on Carlyle Lake, the Kaskaskia River corridor, and the American Bottom parks west toward the Mississippi. Sites within a short drive range from village-run river parks to a large state recreation area with hundreds of hookup spots.
The closest option is American Legion Freedom Farm, a small local ground on the edge of town. A short drive southwest, Kaskaskia River Camping & RV Park in New Athens sits directly on the Kaskaskia River next to the town marina and is maintained by the city, with electrical, water, and sewage hookups available at select sites. Rustic Acres Campgrounds serves travelers looking for a private-park feel closer to the Metro East.
For bigger-lake camping, Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area on the western shore of Carlyle Lake in Clinton County is the anchor destination in the region, and Horseshoe Lake State Park sits about 40 minutes west toward Granite City for basic tent and trailer sites near the Mississippi.
Things to do near Trenton
Carlyle Lake drives most outdoor plans in the area. Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area offers camping, boating, fishing, hunting, picnicking, birdwatching, and more than 9 miles of trails available to hikers. A public swimming pool with zero entry operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the park offers three free public boat ramps, a 40-acre harbor with electric hoists, fish cleaning stations, and an accessible fishing pier at Allen Branch.
On the water, Carlyle Lake supports bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill fishing, and bank access is widely available around the shoreline. West of Trenton, Horseshoe Lake State Park covers 2,960 acres and offers a wide range of recreational opportunities just minutes from a large surrounding urban area, with picturesque settings during migration seasons when geese populate the area. St. Louis attractions, including the Gateway Arch and Cahokia Mounds, are within an hour.

Southwestern Illinois has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and muggy with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and winters are cold with periodic snow and ice. The prime RV window runs from mid-spring through mid-fall, with the busiest weekends falling between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
The Horseshoe Lake State Park campground is open from May 1 to September 30, campers can stay a maximum of 7 days in a 30-day period, and the park does not take reservations for camping. State-park sites at Eldon Hazlet operate on a warm-weather schedule for the swimming pool and store. At Kaskaskia River Camping and RV Park the park is open year round with water on April 1 through October 31, so shoulder-season and winter stays require filling tanks in advance.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong waterfowl viewing at Horseshoe Lake. Spring is typically the wettest stretch, with April averaging around 2.2 inches of rain on 13 to 14 days.
How to book near Trenton

What to expect on arrival near Trenton
The Illini Campground occupies almost 1 1/2 miles of the Carlyle Lake shoreline, and most of the campsites are within easy reach of the water. Expect gravel pads, generally spacious and shaded sites, three shower buildings, numerous privy toilets, playground equipment, basketball and sand volleyball courts, public laundry facilities, and a campground store that stocks groceries, camping and fishing supplies, firewood, ice, and live bait.
Horseshoe Lake State Park is a simpler experience with a dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants, and no showers or electric hookups. Note that access to Chouteau Island has been closed due to bridge repair, and the campground, the road leading to the campground, picnic shelter 3, and the hiking trail are closed due to an installation project on the causeway, so travelers should confirm status with the site before planning a stay. Kaskaskia River Camping and RV Park sits directly on the river with quiet hours observed from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. Cell coverage varies by carrier across the rural pockets between parks.
