Campgrounds and RV parks near Vienna, IL

The Tunnel Hill State Trail stretches for 45 miles from Harrisburg to Karnak, with a 2.5-mile spur continuing from Karnak to the Cache River State Natural Area at the Henry Barkhausen Wetlands Center. A 543-foot long tunnel gave the trail its name, and the route crosses 23 trestles ranging from 34 to 450 feet. Vienna is a common starting point, with a small railroad museum, indoor restrooms, and area information at the trailhead. Cyclists should carry a light for the tunnel, which is dark end to end. Ferne Clyffe State Park covers 2,430 acres of the Shawnee Hills and offers eighteen trails past limestone bluffs, waterfalls, and a 16-acre stocked lake with largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and redear. An Illinois fishing license is required. Other nearby draws include the Cache River State Natural Area with its cypress-tupelo swamp, Heron Pond, Lake of Egypt, and the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. Garden of the Gods and Bell Smith Springs are within day-trip range to the east.

Spring brings wildflowers on the Shawnee Hills forest floor and rain-swollen creeks feeding the seasonal waterfalls at Ferne Clyffe. Trails can be muddy, and some primitive access roads in the national forest turn soft after storms. Reservable sites at Deer Ridge fill quickly on weekends once the weather warms. Summer is hot and humid, with July highs commonly near the upper 80s Fahrenheit and overnight lows around 68. Thunderstorms are frequent, and June is typically the wettest month. Snakes are active on rocky outcrops, and shaded loops at Deer Ridge and Cedar Lake are noticeably cooler than open pull-through parks. Fall is a peak season for RV travel in the region, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong hardwood color on the oak-hickory ridges. Mid-November brings deer hunters to nearby state areas, and equestrian trails at Ferne Clyffe close to horses from November through April. After November 1, the park operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted, and payment is made via an honor box or kiosk. Winter is quiet, with occasional snow, freezing nights, and reduced services at seasonal facilities.

Roads into the Shawnee National Forest are two-lane and winding, but the main private parks near Vienna sit close to I-24 and State Route 146 and are straightforward for large rigs. Deer Ridge has 59 campsites, with sites 1-23 first-come first-served and sites 24-59 reservable online, and offers gravel pads with electricity, picnic tables, and cooking grills. Drinking water, showers, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station round out the amenities. Water connections at Deer Ridge require a long hose, as water is only available at a few locations throughout the park. Cell coverage is variable in the forest interior but generally reliable near Vienna and along I-24. Vienna itself is small; Marion, Anna, and Harrisburg have the closest full grocery stores. Pets are welcome at Ferne Clyffe when leashed.
