Campgrounds and RV parks near Wamac, IL

Water recreation dominates the area. More than 30 species of fish occur at Carlyle Lake, including white bass, channel catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill, carp, and buffalo, and the Allen Branch area offers an accessible fishing pier. A combination of wide open water and strong winds makes Carlyle one of the Midwest's most popular sailing lakes, with regional and national regattas held through the summer. Hiking is straightforward and family-friendly. More than 9 miles of trails are available to hikers at Eldon Hazlet, including the 3-mile Cherokee Trail through mature oak-hickory forest and the 1-mile Pawnee Trail along the highest point on Carlyle Lake. Both connect to Burnside Cemetery, with tombstones dating to the 1830s. At Washington County SRA, a trail circles the entire lake, with smaller paths connecting the different campground areas, and multiple points provide fishing access.

The main camping season runs from spring through fall. At Washington County SRA, the shower building is open April 1 through October 31. At Eldon Hazlet, the public swimming pool with zero entry operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Both parks stay open for camping outside those dates, though services shrink significantly and the shower building at Washington County closes in winter. Summer weekends are the busiest window, driven by lake use, sailing regattas, and holiday traffic. Spring and early fall offer milder temperatures and lighter crowds. Eldon Hazlet has a large reservable section and an extensive first-come, first-served area that typically has availability even during busy periods, which helps last-minute planners. Winter camping is possible at both state areas, but expect closed shower buildings, limited store hours, and cold nights. A controlled pheasant hunting program is held every year at Eldon Hazlet, usually from early November to early January, so hunters share the park in late fall.

State-park sites in the area lean rustic but functional. At Eldon Hazlet, the Illini Campground has 328 Class A campsites with 30 and 50 amp electrical hookups, most within walking distance of the water, plus 36 Class C walk-in tent sites. Amenities include three shower buildings, numerous privy toilets, playgrounds, a basketball court, and a sand volleyball court. A campground store stocks groceries, camping and fishing supplies, firewood, ice, and live bait, and a public laundry room is available. Washington County SRA is smaller and more spread out. Three separate campgrounds are located there: Shady Rest accommodates RVs with electric hookups, while Lonely Oaks and Little Bears serve tent campers without hookups. A potable water fill and dump station are available at the campground entrance. UcamP Express RV Park is a purpose-built overnight stop designed for RV travelers who need a quick and easy overnight stay.
