Campgrounds and RV parks near West City, IL

West City sits in Franklin County in Southern Illinois, just off Interstate 57 and a short drive from Rend Lake, the region's largest reservoir and the primary draw for RV travelers in the area. The town itself is small, but its position on the I-57 corridor makes it a practical base for exploring Shawnee National Forest to the south and the lake recreation areas to the west. RV options in the immediate area range from full-service private parks to state-run lakeside sites. Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area occupies 3,300 acres of former farmland along Rend Lake in Franklin County, managed jointly by Illinois DNR and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with three-quarters of its perimeter bordering the reservoir shoreline. Benton KOA Journey serves travelers looking for a standard KOA experience close to the interstate, while Whittington Woods Campground and Coy and Wilmas One Stop offer smaller, more local alternatives near the lake. EZ Camp - XXXL Storage rounds out the nearby options for RV renters who want a straightforward place to park within minutes of town.

Booking rules vary by property type. The campground at Wayne Fitzgerrell offers 243 sites with electric hookups across five camping loops: Bay Area, Hickman's Point, and Lakeview require reservations through ExploreMoreIL, while Lookout Point and Shady Rest operate first-come, first-served. Lakefront sites on the reservable loops tend to book out first for summer weekends, so planning ahead helps. Private parks such as Benton KOA Journey, Whittington Woods Campground, Coy and Wilmas One Stop, and EZ Camp - XXXL Storage handle their own reservations directly by phone or through their websites. For summer holidays, booking several weeks ahead is recommended. Campers should register with the campground host upon arrival.
