Rend Lake anchors most trips. Numerous boat ramps provide lake access, and beaches, picnic sites, and trails support day-use outings. The lake is well known for crappie, catfish, and bass fishing, and a valid Illinois fishing license is required. The 27-hole Rend Lake Golf Course, the Southern Illinois Artisans Shop, and Rend Lake Resort sit near the lake as well. South and east of town, the Shawnee National Forest opens up across a large stretch of southern Illinois, with hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and swimming widely available. Popular day-trip stops include Garden of the Gods, Little Grand Canyon, Bell Smith Springs, and the Tunnel Hill State Trail, a long crushed-gravel rail-trail suitable for bikes and strollers.

Camping in southern Illinois runs mostly from spring through late fall. Most Rend Lake area Corps of Engineers campgrounds operate seasonally, generally opening in spring and closing by late fall. Private parks around West Frankfort tend to stay open longer, and several operate year round with reduced services in the coldest weeks. Spring brings the wettest weather of the year, along with thunderstorms and rapidly greening forests. It is a strong season for wildflowers and waterfalls in the Shawnee, though low-lying sites can flood. Summer is the peak family season, with warm lake temperatures and busy weekends. Summer highs typically run in the mid-80s Fahrenheit with high humidity, while spring and fall bring milder conditions and occasional thunderstorms. Fall is often the most comfortable time to visit. Cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Shawnee draw weekend crowds through mid-November. Winter camping is possible at private parks that stay open, but expect limited services at the Corps of Engineers sites.
