Campgrounds and RV parks near Willow Lake, IL

Water activities anchor most itineraries. The 40-acre lake at Lake Le-Aqua-Na, completed in 1956, provides fishing, boating, and a swimming beach, with a launching ramp adjacent to the concession stand and only electric motors allowed. Periodic stockings of walleye, northern pike, and channel catfish complement the lake's self-sustaining largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and bullhead populations. The park also offers multi-use trails, picnic areas, and RV, tent, equestrian and youth group campgrounds. Families staying at Lena KOA Holiday find on-site recreation without leaving camp, including a pool, jumping pillow, and organized weekend activities. Emerald Acres Campground II has a swimming lake with a sand beach, a playground, and an on-site restaurant in a historic barn. Off-site, downtown Freeport, the shops in Lena, and historic Galena to the west round out rainy-day options.

Northwest Illinois has a four-season humid continental climate. January is the coldest month in Freeport, with an average temperature near -6°C or about 21°F. Winter is marked by cold and substantial snowfall, and most private parks close for the season. Camping ramps up in spring and peaks from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Emerald Acres Campground II is open May 1 through October 15 and offers 46 sites with electrical and water hookups in addition to permanent sites and tent sites. Lake LaDonna Family Campground is open April 15 through October 15. Crazy Horse Campground runs a main season from April through October and stays open year round. At Lake Le-Aqua-Na, flush toilets and showers are available from May 1 to October 31, while the equestrian campground and trails run April 15 to November 15, weather permitting. Fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and color along wooded trails. Ice fishing, sledding, and cross-country skiing are popular at Lake Le-Aqua-Na in the winter months, but there are no trails or facilities for snowmobiling.

Sites vary in style. At Lake Le-Aqua-Na, the Hickory Hill area is popular for RV camping with paved roads and a clean dump station. Few sites are secluded, with the majority open and spacious with adequate shade, and a large number of electric sites with water are located throughout the campgrounds. Private parks lean toward family resort amenities. Lake LaDonna Family Campground operates on 65 acres with full hookups for RVs up to 65 feet, and features a man-made lake with a white sand beach, water attractions including slides and rope swings, and certified lifeguards on duty. Sites include fire rings, grills, and picnic tables, with most located away from the active railroad tracks along one edge of the property, while short-term campers receive sites closer to the tracks where freight trains pass several times nightly. Pack earplugs if that matters. Emerald Acres has 136 sites in total, including 90 full hookups and 46 electric-water sites at 20 and 30 amp, plus tables, showers, a dump station, and a playground.
