Campgrounds and RV parks near Aurora, IN

The Ohio River is the main draw. Boat ramps, fishing access, and riverfront parks line the shore between Aurora, Lawrenceburg, and Rising Sun, and Rising Star RV Park and Camp Shore Campground put travelers within easy reach of the water. Hillforest Mansion, a National Historic Landmark in downtown Aurora, and the small museums in Lawrenceburg fill an afternoon off the water. For kids and families, the Cincinnati Zoo, Newport Aquarium, and Kings Island amusement park are all inside an hour's drive. Closer in, Versailles State Park offers hiking, mountain biking, and fishing or paddling on the 230-acre Versailles Lake, and the Perfect North Slopes area hosts seasonal outdoor events. Rural campgrounds like Indian Springs Campground LLP and the two Beyonder Getaway properties near Rising Sun add pool access, fishing ponds, and organized weekend activities.

The primary camping season in southeastern Indiana runs from mid-April through late October. Most private campgrounds around Aurora open for the season in April and close in late October or early November, with a smaller number keeping limited sites open year-round for self-contained RVs. Summer is peak season. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book out earliest, especially riverfront sites and full-hookup pull-throughs. The Ohio River can rise sharply after heavy spring rain, and low-lying riverfront sites at parks along the shore are sometimes closed or relocated in March and April until water levels drop. Fall is the quietest good-weather window. Days are mild, humidity drops, and the wooded hills along the Ohio turn color from mid-October into early November. Winter camping is limited: freezing overnight temperatures are common from December through February, water lines and full-hookup sites at state parks and many private parks are winterized, and amenities such as pools, camp stores, and bathhouses close for the season.

Campgrounds in the Aurora area are mostly small to mid-size private parks rather than large resort chains. Expect grass or gravel pads, 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and dump stations, with full hookups more common at riverfront and RV-focused parks like Rising Star RV Park. Nearby Versailles State Park is electric-only with a central dump station. Cell service is generally reliable near the river and along US-50, and spottier in the surrounding hills. Terrain along the Ohio is a mix of flat river bottoms and steep access roads down from the ridge. Larger rigs should ask about the approach road and turning radius when booking rural sites. Summer brings mosquitoes and river gnats near the water, so screens and repellent are useful. Firewood is typically sold on-site, and most parks restrict outside wood to limit the spread of invasive insects.
