Camping near Bedford, Indiana
Bedford sits in the limestone country of south-central Indiana, within easy reach of two major public-land camping hubs: Spring Mill State Park to the southwest and Monroe Lake to the north. Both are managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and serve as the anchor destinations for RV travelers in the region.
Spring Mill State Park sits south of Bloomington, about 3 miles east of the city of Mitchell on Indiana State Road 60. The campground offers full-hookup, electric, and primitive sites for RV or tent camping. To the north, Monroe Lake is Indiana's largest reservoir, and the main RV-friendly campground is Paynetown State Recreation Area Monroe Lake on the northeast shore.
Private options fill in the gaps. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lake Monroe and Lake Monroe Village cater to families looking for pools, planned activities, and full-service sites, while Hardens Camp Tennessee Indiana offers a smaller, quieter setup between the two lakes.
Things to do near Bedford
Spring Mill State Park is the region's headline attraction. Visitors can explore the restored 1800s Pioneer Village, the nature center, and the Grissom Memorial honoring Hoosier astronaut Virgil Grissom. A boat tour of Twin Caves run by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources travels about 500 feet into the cave.
Monroe Lake covers water-based recreation, with fishing, hiking, picnicking, boating, and bird and eagle viewing. Two sandy beaches sit on the east side of the lake at Fairfax State Recreation Area and on the northeast side at Paynetown State Recreation Area.
Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lake Monroe or Lake Monroe Village typically build days around the lake beaches, on-site pools, and short drives into Bloomington for restaurants and supplies.

Summer is peak season across every campground in the area. The warmer months from May through September offer the most reliable conditions for hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming, and families pack the parks between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Early to mid-May and mid-to-late September tend to beat the crowds while keeping most services running.
Shoulder-season campers should plan around reduced services. Most Indiana DNR properties turn off water, close modern restrooms, and winterize full-hookup sites during the coldest months, with water typically off from November through mid-March or April depending on forecasted temperatures. Campers in early spring or late fall should contact the property office to check on the availability of water, modern restrooms, and full-hookup camping.
Winter camping is possible but bare-bones. A handful of sites at every Indiana State Park where camping is offered remain available for reservations year-round through Camp.IN.gov. Advance booking still matters on summer weekends, when lakefront electric loops sell out early.
How to book campgrounds near Bedford
State-park sites at Spring Mill and Monroe Lake are booked through the Indiana DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica at Camp.IN.gov, or by calling 1-866-622-6746. The maximum booking window is six months in advance of arrival. Campsites not reserved are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but availability cannot be counted on, especially during the summer.
Minimum stays apply on busy dates. Weekday stays require one night Monday through Thursday; Friday night stays must include Thursday or Saturday, and Saturday night stays must include Friday or Sunday.
Private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lake Monroe, Lake Monroe Village, and Hardens Camp Tennessee Indiana are booked directly with the resort by phone or through each park's own website, with their own deposit and cancellation policies.
What to expect on arrival
State-park campers pay an entrance fee on top of the site cost. When staying overnight, guests pay the entrance fee the first time they enter, and the receipt or hang tag serves as an in/out pass for the remainder of the stay. An Indiana Annual Entrance Pass covers repeat visits across the state system.
Paynetown is large, lakeside, and lively, with electric and non-electric sites, picnic tables and fire rings, modern restrooms with showers, and a dump station for RVs. Ticks and mosquitoes can be prevalent in warm months, so insect repellent is worth packing.
Check alerts before departure. Heavy rainfall can raise Monroe Lake to high-water levels, affecting recreation facilities and closing beaches until the water recedes. Blue-green algae can occur in the lake; visitors should avoid drinking untreated water and rinse off after swimming.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Bedford, IN
How much does an RV rental in Bedford, IN typically cost?
Great news for budget-minded travelers: RV rental in Bedford, IN is one of the more affordable ways to explore southern Indiana's limestone country. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and luxurious Class A motorhomes start around $250 nightly. Booking midweek and outside the Limestone Heritage Festival in late June can shave 15-25% off your total. For a cheap RV rental in Bedford, look for travel trailers with delivery included so you skip the tow vehicle requirement entirely. Pro tip: shoulder months like April and October offer the best balance of mild weather and lower rates, plus the Hoosier National Forest foliage in October is absolutely stunning.
visitindiana.com/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/What license do I need to rent an RV in Bedford, IN?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Bedford, IN. Indiana does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for any RV available on RVezy, whether you're driving a campervan, Class C motorhome, or towing a travel trailer. You'll need to be 25 or older, and you'll confirm your ID right through the RVezy platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? An International Driving Permit (IDP) paired with your home license keeps you fully road-legal in Indiana. Most first-time renters are pleasantly surprised at how simple the process is, so you can focus on planning the fun stuff like Bluespring Caverns or Spring Mill State Park.
in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/driver-licenses/Is RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included in Bedford, IN?
Yes, and this is one of the best parts of booking through RVezy: every RV rental in Bedford comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included. You choose your protection level at checkout (RVezy offers tiered plans so you can pick the coverage that fits your comfort level), and it covers eligible damages to the RV so you can explore the rolling hills of Lawrence County with peace of mind. If you get a flat tire on the way to Hoosier National Forest or have a mechanical issue at Spring Mill State Park, one phone call gets help dispatched. Review the protection plan details on RVezy before booking so you know exactly what's covered.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if my plans change after I book my Bedford, IN RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it applies consistently across the marketplace. The exact refund depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, with clear tiers outlined in the RVezy Help Center. Because the policy is platform-wide, you won't see different cancellation rules on each listing. If something unexpected pops up before your Bedford RV trip, contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options. Pro tip: book early to lock in popular weekends like the Limestone Heritage Festival, knowing you can review the cancellation terms in advance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Bedford, IN?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Bedford is easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see listings whose hosts welcome furry co-pilots. Many hosts charge a small pet fee (typically $25 to $75 per trip) to cover extra cleaning. Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: Spring Mill State Park about 10 miles south permits leashed pets on trails and at most campsites (not inside cabins or the inn), and Hoosier National Forest is dog-friendly across its 200,000+ acres. Pro tip: pack a long lead so your dog can sniff around your campsite while you grill dinner.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/about-us/pets/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Bedford, IN?
Yes, RV delivery in Bedford is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow the RV directly to your campsite at Spring Mill State Park, Hardin Ridge Recreation Area on Lake Monroe, or a private park near town, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $4 per mile round-trip, with many hosts offering free delivery within a set radius of Bedford. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it. This is a game-changer if you don't want to tow a trailer or navigate a big rig on the winding back roads of Hoosier National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003356133-Renting-an-RVHow far can I drive on my Bedford RV trip and what about mileage limits?
You've got plenty of range for a great Bedford RV trip. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, but most include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles billed at $0.30 to $0.50 each. Some listings even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer loops. From Bedford you can reach Brown County State Park in about 45 minutes (35 miles), Louisville, Kentucky in 90 minutes (75 miles), Indianapolis in under 2 hours (80 miles), Mammoth Cave National Park in about 2.5 hours (140 miles), and the Indiana Dunes in roughly 4 hours (220 miles). Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-stop loop, message the host before booking and ask about a custom mileage package; many will happily bundle extra miles at a discount.
in.gov/indot/Where are the best campgrounds near Bedford, IN for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Bedford. Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell (about 10 miles south) offers electric sites tucked among pioneer history and the famous Twin Caves boat tour. Hardin Ridge Recreation Area on Lake Monroe (about 25 miles north) has electric hookups, a swim beach, and ridgetop sites within Hoosier National Forest. Paynetown State Recreation Area on Monroe Lake offers a large campground with electric hookups. For something more rustic, Hoosier National Forest offers dispersed camping options. Pro tip: reserve Spring Mill at camp.IN.gov six months out for summer weekends; it's a crown jewel of the region and books up fast.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/spring-mill-state-park/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Bedford, IN?
Bedford has a longer RV season than most travelers realize. Late April through early June brings wildflowers, dogwoods in bloom, and daytime highs in the 65 to 80 degree range, ideal for cave tours at Bluespring Caverns. September and October are a local favorite: crisp 60 to 75 degree days, fall color in Hoosier National Forest, and fewer crowds. July and August are warm (mid-80s with humidity), perfect for swimming at Lake Monroe but you'll want a rental with strong AC. Winter trips are possible in a four-season rig, and Paoli Peaks ski area is a short drive south. Pro tip: book the weekend after Memorial Day for a sweet spot of warm weather and open campsites.
weather.gov/ind/I'm a first-time renter. Will I actually know how to use the RV?
Yes, and you'll be more comfortable than you expect. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, awning, and dump procedure. Most orientations last 45 to 90 minutes, and your host's phone number stays in your pocket the entire trip in case a question pops up at your campsite. First time renting an RV in Bedford is actually a great place to start because the terrain around Lawrence County is mostly gentle rolling hills, not mountain passes, and major routes like US-50 and SR-37 are wide and easy. Pro tip: take video on your phone during the walkthrough so you can re-watch how to lower the stabilizers when you're parked at Hardin Ridge.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/about-us/camping/What happens if I have a breakdown during my Bedford, IN RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on SR-37 outside Bedford or a dead battery at Spring Mill State Park is just a phone call away. Roadside can dispatch tire changes, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockout service, and towing across southern Indiana. Your host is also a great first call for quick questions like resetting a tripped GFCI outlet or restarting the water pump. Bedford has RV service options nearby and a Walmart Supercenter for last-minute supplies. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have the info handy if you ever need to call for service.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Bedford RV rental across state lines for a road trip?
You sure can. Most RVezy hosts in Bedford welcome multi-state trips, and the protection package covers travel throughout the continental US and Canada (just confirm cross-border plans with your host before booking if heading to Canada). Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the insurance does not extend there. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Bedford include heading south to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky (2.5 hours), east to Red River Gorge (3.5 hours), or north through Indianapolis up to Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes (4 hours). The Great Smoky Mountains are a doable 6-hour drive for a longer loop. Pro tip: tell your host your full route at booking so they can advise on mileage packages and any state-park-specific length restrictions.
in.gov/indot/2390.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in Bedford?
Plan smart and fuel won't sneak up on you. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes typically deliver 6 to 10 MPG; travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect 30-40% fewer MPG while towing. Indiana gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, and Bedford has several stations along SR-37 including Murphy USA, Speedway, and a Pilot Travel Center off I-69 in nearby Bloomington that accommodates big rigs. For a typical 3-night, 300-mile loop through Hoosier National Forest in a Class C, budget around $120 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: download the GasBuddy app and fuel up in Bedford or Bloomington before heading deep into the forest, where stations get sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bedford, IN?
For the best campgrounds near Bedford, plan ahead but not panic-ahead. Indiana State Park campgrounds like Spring Mill and Paynetown open reservations six months in advance through camp.IN.gov, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often book up quickly after opening. Hardin Ridge and other Hoosier National Forest sites use Recreation.gov on the same 6-month rolling window. For midweek summer or any spring/fall weekend, 4 to 8 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Private parks in and around Bedford often have same-week availability. Pro tip: if your dream weekend is sold out, set a Recreation.gov notification alert; cancellations are common and a great site at Hardin Ridge can pop up days before your trip.
camp.in.gov/What are driving conditions like around Bedford, IN?
Driving an RV around Bedford is genuinely manageable, even for first-timers. The main routes (US-50, SR-37, and SR-58) are wide two- and four-lane highways with gentle grades through rolling limestone country, very different from mountain driving out West. You'll encounter some winding sections heading into Hoosier National Forest and on the back roads to Story or Nashville, so take those at a relaxed pace. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially in Lawrence and Monroe counties. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly in July and August; pulling off at a rest area for 20 minutes usually outwaits them. Pro tip: avoid Bloomington's College Avenue near Indiana University on home football Saturdays in fall, and use SR-45 or SR-46 to bypass the worst of the traffic.
in.gov/indot/current-conditions/What amenities do campgrounds near Bedford typically offer?
You'll find a great mix. Indiana State Park campgrounds like Spring Mill and Paynetown offer 50-amp electric hookups, modern bathhouses with hot showers, potable water fill stations, and on-site dump stations included with your nightly fee. Hardin Ridge on Lake Monroe offers electric sites, vault and flush toilets, and a centralized dump station. Private parks like Free Spirit Campground in Bedford have full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp electric) right at the site, plus WiFi. Cell service is solid on Verizon and AT&T near Bedford and Lake Monroe but spottier deep in Hoosier National Forest. Pro tip: top off freshwater and dump your tanks before leaving developed campgrounds, especially if you're heading to dispersed forest sites along Berry Ridge Road where no hookups exist.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/about-us/camping/What's actually inside a typical RV rental in Bedford?
More than you'd expect, honestly. A typical motorhome rental in Bedford comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, dinette and/or sofa that convert to extra sleeping space, a kitchen with a 3-burner stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink, and basic cookware. The bathroom includes a toilet, shower, and sink. Most RVs have rooftop AC, a furnace, a TV, and many include a generator for off-grid power. Class C and Class A motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 8 and have seatbelts for travel. Many hosts also throw in linens, towels, outdoor chairs, a portable grill, and leveling blocks. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm specifics like whether the rig has a backup camera; it makes navigating tight campsites at Spring Mill State Park much easier.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Bedford rental?
RVezy hosts in Bedford offer flexible options to customize your trip. Common add-ons include camping kits ($35 to $75 with linens, kitchen gear, and outdoor chairs), generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Bedford, Mitchell, or Bloomington, with most hosts offering a 60 to 90 minute orientation. Delivery to your campground is widely available too, often for $2 to $4 per mile. Mileage policies vary by host (typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with unlimited mileage options out there if you filter for them). Pro tip: ask about a late return or early pickup window when you message the host; many will offer a free 1-2 hour buffer if their calendar allows, perfect for fitting in one last Bluespring Caverns boat tour.
visitindiana.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Bedford, IN?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform: you pay the booking total upfront with a credit or debit card, and funds are held until your trip begins, releasing to the host after pickup. A refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged, and released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues on your Bedford RV rental, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff, return with a similar fuel level, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it.
