Campgrounds and RV parks near Greenville, IN

Outdoor activity centers on Deam Lake State Recreation Area, which has a sandy swim beach open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, a boat ramp restricted to electric trolling motors, and rowboat and kayak rentals on weekends during that same season. Trail 3, a six-mile loop, is the multipurpose trail open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horses, and the park serves as the southern trailhead for the Knobstone Trail, a 60-mile backcountry footpath that is Indiana's longest hiking trail. The equestrian campground also connects to roughly 80 miles of multipurpose trails in adjacent Clark State Forest. Louisville sits a short drive south across the Ohio River. Families use campgrounds near Greenville as a base for Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Louisville Zoo, and the Louisville Science Center. Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville is known for its Devonian-era fossil beds.

The camping calendar in this part of southern Indiana revolves around a warm, humid summer and a mild, changeable shoulder season. Camping at Deam Lake State Recreation Area is available year-round, but services are limited from November through April: water is typically turned off in most Indiana state park campgrounds during that window, and some loops and comfort stations may be closed. Rent-a-camp cabins at Deam Lake operate seasonally from April through October, with walk-ins possible in March and November when weather allows. Late spring through early fall is the busiest window. The beach, food concession on weekends, and boat rentals at Deam Lake run from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and weekend and holiday sites fill quickly. The Kentucky Derby falls on the first Saturday in May, and campgrounds within driving range of Churchill Downs, including Louisville North Campground, book out well in advance. Fall brings drier, cooler conditions and is often the most comfortable time to visit, with October historically the driest month in the Louisville area. Winter camping is possible at Deam Lake but expect reduced amenities and occasional freezing days.

Deam Lake State Recreation Area has two separate camping areas: a family campground with 113 electric sites, picnic tables, fire rings, modern restrooms and showers, and a dump station in the area, plus an equestrian campground with 63 electric sites with hitching posts and 36 sites with horse stalls that connects to trails in the park and adjacent Clark State Forest. Water hookups are not run to individual sites, but drinking water and a fill station are available in the campground, and some pads are short or uneven, so larger rigs should review site details before booking. Louisville North Campground is a compact, gravel-lot RV park just across the Ohio River from downtown Louisville, with full hookups, 30 and 50-amp service, and pull-through sites that can accommodate rigs up to about 70 feet. Sites are tight and freight trains run along the property, so plan on train noise and minimal outdoor space. It is best treated as a convenient basecamp for the city rather than a scenic stay.
