Campgrounds near Hanover, Indiana
Hanover sits on bluffs above the Ohio River in Jefferson County, southern Indiana, just west of Madison. The area draws RV travelers because several established state park campgrounds cluster within a short drive, straddling the Indiana and Kentucky sides of the river.
Clifty Falls State Park covers more than 1,416 acres near Madison, with entrances on state roads 56 and 62, and is the closest developed campground to Hanover. To the west, Hardy Lake State Recreation Area sits on a 740-acre reservoir in Scott County, Indiana, with two camping areas: the modern Shale Bluff Campground and the primitive Wooster - Hardy Lake State Park loop near the water. Across the river in Kentucky, General Butler State Resort Park sits on a hilltop where the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers meet, near Carrollton.
For RVers who want full hookups close to town amenities, 2 Rivers Campground in Carrollton is a private option along the riverfront. Farther south, Charlestown State Park covers over 5,100 acres as Indiana's third largest state park, located 8 miles east of I-65 on State Road 62, giving Louisville-area travelers an easy base for exploring the Ohio River valley.
Things to do near Hanover
Clifty Falls State Park offers waterfalls, a deep canyon, and rugged canyon trails. Tunnel Falls is the tallest of the park's waterfalls at 83 feet, and the town of Madison sits minutes away for shops and riverfront dining. A seasonal swimming pool operates in summer at the park.
At Hardy Lake, the 740-acre reservoir offers fishing for bluegill, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, and tiger muskie, and allows water skiing, with hiking trails, a swimming beach, and a picnic area. Charlestown State Park has over 15 miles of trails ranging from easy to rugged, wildflowers, Devonian fossil outcrops, and karst topography with large sinkholes, plus the historic Portersville Bridge crossing to the Rose Island ruins of a 1920s amusement park.
On the Kentucky side, General Butler State Resort Park adds a small lake, mini-golf, hiking trails, and a scenic overlook. Kentucky Speedway is about 15 minutes from Carrollton for race weekends.

The core RV season runs from late spring through mid-fall. Clifty Falls State Park offers full services from May through October, with reduced winter camping services from November into April on select loops. Hardy Lake and Charlestown State Park operate year-round, with Charlestown's paved sites suited to shoulder-season use.
Spring brings the strongest waterfall flow at Clifty Falls but also muddy trails and Ohio River flooding risk. Summer is peak booking season: sites fill weeks out on weekends, water sports pick up at Hardy Lake, and the pool at Clifty Falls opens. The 1852 railroad tunnel at Clifty Falls has historically been open May 1 to October 31 and closed the rest of the year to protect hibernating bats, though it has recently been closed indefinitely after a rockslide, so check park alerts before relying on tunnel access.
Fall delivers reliable foliage and cooler nights, and it is often the best window for a first-time visit. During winter at Clifty Falls, water and restroom access are limited, and campers in electric sites need to bring their own water.
How to book near Hanover
Indiana state park campgrounds, including Clifty Falls, Hardy Lake, and Charlestown, use the Indiana DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 6 months in advance, beginning at 12 noon on that day, and by phone at 1-866-6CAMP-IN (1-866-622-6746). All campsites are reservable and reservations are recommended; unreserved sites are first-come, first-served, but availability is not guaranteed, especially in summer.
Kentucky State Parks use a separate system. At General Butler State Resort Park, the maximum reservation window is 12 months in advance, and there is a two-night minimum stay on peak season weekends at all parks except the Kentucky Horse Park. Private options such as 2 Rivers Campground in Carrollton book directly through the campground.
Indiana state parks charge a daily entrance fee per vehicle, with a higher rate for out-of-state plates, collected on top of camping fees.
What to expect at Hanover campgrounds
Expect gravel or paved pads, electric hookups on most loops, and modern bathhouses at the state parks. Clifty Falls has an electric loop with 100 Class A sites (including 31 pull-through) plus 62 non-electric Class C sites, with picnic tables, fire rings, showers, and flush toilets. Hardy Lake's Shale Bluff Campground offers around 150 electric sites on gravel pads with 30-amp and a smaller number of 50-amp premium sites, while the primitive Wooster loop has a vault toilet and a water pump.
Charlestown State Park's campground has both electricity-only Class A sites and full-hookup AA sites (water, sewer, and electric) on paved pads, with modern comfort stations. Kentucky state parks prohibit importation of firewood from outside Kentucky to help prevent the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer; firewood is sold in the campgrounds.
