Camping near Linton, Indiana
Linton sits in Greene County in southwestern Indiana, roughly 30 miles south of Terre Haute and within easy driving distance of the Wabash River corridor. The surrounding landscape mixes reclaimed coal-country lakes, farmland, and pockets of hardwood forest, giving RV travelers a compact base for lake fishing, short hikes, and small-town stops.
Campground options range from full-service private parks to state and county sites. Shakamak State Park offers a modern campground with full hookup, electric, and non-electric sites, along with cabins, cottages, and a group camp for those not traveling in an RV. Hillbilly Acres Campground LLC and New Vision RV Park LLC provide private-park alternatives closer to town, while Sullivan County Park & Lake and Fowler Park add county-run lake settings a short drive away.
Shakamak sits about 30 miles southeast of Terre Haute near Jasonville, and most other options in this cluster are within a 20 to 40 minute drive of Linton, which keeps day-trip logistics simple for families rotating between swim, fishing, and trail time.
Things to do around Linton
Water recreation anchors most trips. Shakamak State Park has three man-made lakes, Shakamak, Lenape, and Kickapoo, with 400 acres of water for fishing and boating, plus a family aquatic center for swimming. Boating on the park lakes is limited to electric trolling motors, which keeps the water quiet for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards, and rentals are available seasonally. Sullivan County Park & Lake and Fowler Park add additional shorelines for bank fishing and paddling.
On land, the state park has a network of wooded trails through oak forest and pine plantings, plus a bike loop. Playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, a nature center, and amphitheater programs round out family options at Shakamak.
Off-site, Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area east of Linton is a well-known birding stop, and downtown Linton offers small-town dining and grocery resupply.

Peak camping season in this area runs from March through October, with summer weekends the busiest. Southwestern Indiana summers are warm and humid, and afternoon thunderstorms are common, so shaded sites fill first. About two-thirds of the campsites at Shakamak are in a wooded area, offering cool shade in summer and color in autumn.
Spring brings green-up and rising lake levels but also the wettest stretches of the year, and low-lying county park loops can stay soft after storms. Fall is often the sweet spot for RV travel here, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood color through October. Pool and aquatic-center amenities are summer-only and hours can shift with weather and staffing.
Shakamak State Park is open year round, but winter services are limited, some loops close, and private parks near Linton may reduce operations or shut off water lines during hard freezes. Confirm hookups and gate hours directly before booking off-season.
How to book campgrounds near Linton
State-park sites use the Indiana DNR reservation system through ReserveAmerica. For electric and full-hookup campsites at Shakamak, reservations can be made from the day of arrival and up to six months in advance, while cabins, cottages, and shelters open twelve months out. Summer weekends and holidays book out early, so lock in dates as soon as your travel window is firm.
Shakamak does not designate specific first-come, first-served sites, but any site not reserved is available on arrival. During summer this is rarely a workable strategy, though it is more realistic in the off-season. County parks such as Sullivan County Park & Lake and Fowler Park handle their own reservations through their county park offices.
Private parks including Hillbilly Acres Campground LLC and New Vision RV Park LLC book directly by phone or through their own websites. Confirm rig length, hookup type, and check-in cutoff when reserving.
What to expect on arrival
State-park entry is gated. If the entrance hut is closed, campers should head through the gate to the park office to check in. A daily entrance fee applies to vehicles at Indiana state parks in addition to the camping reservation, and an annual pass covers repeat visits. Campground check-in at Shakamak is 2 p.m.
Sites at Shakamak vary from full hookup to non-electric, with shower houses, restrooms, a dump station, and a camp store in the campground area. Each campsite typically includes a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Firewood can often be purchased at the park or nearby stores to prevent the spread of invasive species, so plan to buy local rather than hauling wood in.
Alcohol is prohibited in Indiana state parks, including Shakamak. Cell coverage is generally usable in and around Linton but can drop in wooded loops and along lake trails.

You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy will verify your ID quickly through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the United States? RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy that applies to every booking on the platform, including a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/greene-sullivan-state-forest/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Linton?
Yes, RV delivery in Linton is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer to your campsite at Shakamak State Park, Sunset Park and Lake Campground, Hillbilly Acres, or even directly to a private address in Greene County, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location, so closer drop-offs cost less. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your destination's address to confirm the exact fee. Easy mode unlocked.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/shakamak-state-park/How far can I drive from Linton on a typical RV rental?

in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/shakamak-state-park/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Linton?
Linton has four real seasons, and each one has its draw. Late April through mid-June is arguably the sweet spot, with daytime highs in the 65 to 80°F range, wildflowers blooming in Greene-Sullivan State Forest, and warbler migration peaking at Goose Pond. September and October bring crisp 55 to 75°F days, fall color along the West Fork White River, and far fewer mosquitoes. Don't overlook late February and early March, when the Marsh Madness Sandhill Crane Festival draws birders to watch up to 25,000 cranes stage at Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area. July and August are warm and humid (often 85 to 92°F), making the campground pool at Shakamak State Park a must.
weather.gov/ind/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Linton beginner-friendly?
Linton is honestly one of the easier places in the country for a first time renting an RV. Traffic is light, roads are flat to gently rolling, and you can get from town to Goose Pond, Shakamak State Park, or Greene-Sullivan State Forest on wide two-lane highways like State Road 54 and State Road 59 without ever touching a major freeway. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, holding tanks, and propane. Nervous about driving? Choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Linton, or book a host who offers delivery and setup so the rig is waiting for you. You'll be a pro by night two.
in.gov/indot/What happens if something breaks down during my Linton RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or lockout on State Road 59 near Goose Pond is just a phone call away. Roadside can dispatch tow trucks, mobile mechanics, tire service, and fuel delivery throughout Indiana. Your host is also a direct lifeline; most respond quickly and can often troubleshoot small issues (like a tripped GFCI or a stuck slide) over the phone. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if anything needs to be escalated. Snap photos of tire pressures and propane levels at pickup so you have a baseline if questions come up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Linton RV rental into other states or across the Canadian border?
Most hosts in Linton allow interstate travel, so a motorhome rental in Linton can easily roll into Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, or Tennessee for a classic Midwest RV road trip from Linton. Popular routes include the run south to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky (about 175 miles), the drive north to Indiana Dunes National Park (about 230 miles), and the push east to Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the specific host and their insurance, so message them directly through the listing to confirm before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Always confirm your route in writing with your host.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV road trip from Linton?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's manageable from Linton. Indiana gas prices typically run slightly below the national average, often around $3.00 to $3.40 per gallon for regular unleaded. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 12 to 18 mpg for a travel trailer setup behind a truck, and 18 to 22 mpg for a Class B campervan. A weekend round trip from Linton to Lake Monroe (about 100 miles total) might burn $30 to $50 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: fuel up at the Pilot or Love's near Terre Haute on I-70 before heading south, where prices are usually a few cents lower than in town.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Linton?
For most Linton-area trips, two to four weeks ahead is plenty, which is wonderfully relaxed compared to busy national parks. Indiana State Parks like Shakamak accept reservations up to six months in advance through the Indiana DNR's reservation system at camp.IN.gov, and weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill up first, so lock those in by March or April. Sunset Park in Linton books directly through the city, and Hillbilly Acres and Eagles Nest take reservations by phone. For Marsh Madness weekend in early March, book at least two months out. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have walk-up availability even in summer.
camp.in.gov/What are driving conditions like around Linton?
Driving an RV around Linton is refreshingly low-stress. State Road 54 and State Road 59, the two main routes through town, are flat to gently rolling with wide shoulders and very little congestion. Watch for occasional coal-truck traffic on county roads near former mining areas in Greene and Sullivan counties, and slow down for deer at dawn and dusk, especially along forested stretches near Greene-Sullivan State Forest. Indiana winters can bring icy patches from December through February, and summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly in July and August. Bridges over the West Fork White River may have height limits of 13 feet 6 inches; most motorhomes clear easily, but verify your rig's height with your host. Otherwise it's smooth, scenic two-lane cruising.

Pro tip: most Indiana state parks include free hot showers in your nightly fee, which is a small luxury after a day on Goose Pond's levees.

Many include a roof-mounted air conditioner, propane furnace, flat-screen TV, and onboard generator. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Linton, with RV delivery available to local campgrounds like Shakamak State Park or Sunset Park for an added fee. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Linton,IndianaHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Linton?
Payment is simple and secure. When you rent an RV in Linton through RVezy, you pay by credit card directly on the platform, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup; the amount is set per listing and depends on the RV's value. As long as you return the RV on time, clean, with the correct fuel and propane levels, and without new damage, the hold is released after your trip ends. Take time-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, tires, and dash gauges at both pickup and return to keep everything smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great first RV itinerary from Linton for a family trip?
For a family RV trip in Linton, try this easy 4-day loop. Day 1: Pick up your rig (or have it delivered) and settle into Shakamak State Park about 10 miles north, where kids can swim in the huge pool and fish three stocked lakes.
