Campgrounds and RV parks near Loogootee, IN

The main draw is Patoka Lake itself: boating, fishing, and swimming during summer, plus wildlife watching year-round. River otters and osprey were reintroduced at Patoka by the DNR, and the property is one of a few DNR properties that house nonreleasable ambassador raptors. Interpretive Services staff present programs featuring a nonreleasable red-tailed hawk and other natural and cultural features, along with sessions on kayaking and Dutch oven cooking. On land, a paved bike trail runs through the park, connecting to hiking trails, and an 18-hole disc golf course sits near the Newton Stewart Recreation Area. West Boggs Park north of Loogootee adds another lake for paddling and shoreline fishing. Off-site, French Lick and West Baden lie a short drive east for historic hotel tours, and Jasper offers restocking stops for groceries, fuel, and RV supplies before heading back to camp.

Southern Indiana runs a full four-season calendar. Summers are long, warm, and humid; winters are short, cold, and can bring snow. Peak RV season stretches from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with warm evenings ideal for lake use but heavy weekend demand at Patoka. Spring brings the wettest stretch. May is the wettest month in southwest Indiana, averaging roughly 5.6 inches (about 143 mm) of precipitation, so expect muddy sites and possible flood advisories on low-lying loops. Water levels can rise fast: due to high water levels, the swimming beach at Patoka Lake (Newton Stewart SRA) has been closed, with updates posted on the reservation page and Facebook. Fall is the shoulder favorite. Cooler nights, drier weather, and hardwood color through October make September and October strong choices for a quieter trip. Patoka Lake campgrounds are generally open year-round, though services may be limited during winter months. A seasonal health note: blue-green algae advisories occur at the Patoka beach; avoid contact with algae and avoid swallowing water while swimming.

Public sites at Patoka Lake are the largest and most varied. There are more than 500 campsites across three different campgrounds within the main park area, and the Modern Campground has 437 sites with electricity, concrete pad, picnic table, and firepit, with water fill and dump stations nearby. RVers should plan water access before arriving, as the only waterfill location is at the camp store. Site character varies: some sites sit closer to the beach while others provide more wooded settings with natural windbreaks, and certain sites require longer walks to shower facilities. Private parks near Loogootee tend to be smaller and quieter, with pull-through RV pads, on-site laundry at some locations, and easier last-minute availability outside holiday weekends.
