New Washington sits in Clark County in southern Indiana, within easy driving distance of the Ohio River corridor and the Louisville metro area. RV travelers use it as a base for reaching several Indiana Department of Natural Resources properties, including Charlestown State Park, located 8 miles east of I-65 on State Road 62, and Clifty Falls State Park, one mile west of Madison on SR 56 or SR 62.
The closest developed campgrounds are inside the state park system. Charlestown State Park has 60 full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and electricity, plus 132 Class A electric sites, along with modern comfort stations. Farther north, Hardy Lake State Recreation Area sits on a 741-acre reservoir in Scott County, with Shale Bluff Campground providing electric sites and Wooser - Hardy Lake State Park offering primitive lakefront sites.
For travelers who prefer privately operated parks with hookups closer to town, Silver Lakes Motorhome Complex and RV Park and Add-more RV Park round out the local options.

Southern Indiana state park campgrounds generally run a full-service peak season from spring through fall and switch to limited services in winter. At Clifty Falls, the campground is open year-round, with the camp store and laundry operating seasonally from spring through fall, and winter camping available with limited services such as one family restroom and a water source at the non-electric comfort station. Hardy Lake follows a similar pattern: both campgrounds are open year round, with electric available at each site in Shale Bluff Campground.
Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest windows, and lakefront and full-hookup sites tend to book first. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, thinner crowds, and better trail conditions in the rugged canyon terrain at Clifty Falls and Charlestown.
Winter travel is possible for self-contained rigs, but expect reduced bathhouse access, closed pools, and seasonal camp stores. Confirm loop-specific closures with the park office before arrival.
How to book a site
State park sites in this area are handled through the Indiana DNR reservation platform on ReserveAmerica. Reservations at Clifty Falls and Hardy Lake can be made for today and up to six months in advance. Indiana DNR allows advance reservations with a maximum stay of 14 days.
For camping at Indiana state parks, check-in and check-out time is 2:00 p.m., except on Sundays and designated holidays when check-in and check-out time is 5:00 p.m. local time. Only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite, and additional vehicles must use the overflow parking lot.
Privately run parks such as Silver Lakes Motorhome Complex and RV Park and Add-more RV Park are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on arrival
State park campgrounds in this region are gate-controlled and require an entrance permit in addition to the site fee. Sites are typically gravel or paved pads with a fire ring and picnic table. At Clifty Falls, sites range from primitive tent areas to Class A electric sites with 50-amp hookups on gravel spurs, and the campground includes ADA-accessible restrooms with hot showers plus a dump station near the gatehouse.
Hardy Lake's Shale Bluff Campground spreads across roughly 150 electric sites on gravel pads, with hiking trails that wind through Indiana hardwoods and along the shoreline. The Charlestown campground sits inside the park with 60 full-hookup and 132 electric sites, so follow the signs to the camping areas once past the gatehouse.
