Campgrounds and RV parks near Oaktown, IN

Water recreation is the main draw. Sullivan County Park & Lake features a 461-acre lake with boating, fishing, cabin rentals, a beach, and picnic areas, plus boat storage and paddle craft access. Anglers target hybrid saugeye, walleye, and bluegill from shore or boat. Shakamak State Park adds hiking and swimming to the mix. Three man-made lakes offer 400 acres of water for fishing and boating, while a family aquatic center provides swimming. Camping, hiking, reservable cabins, and group camps round out the property. Several wooded loop trails wind past old coal-mine remnants and along the lakeshores. Closer to Terre Haute, Prairie Creek Park offers fishing at a 13.4-acre lake and small pond, a playground, ball field, picnic shelters, and short wooded trails, making it a practical family stop.

Camping in this part of Indiana runs strongest from late April through October. Spring brings green-up and reliable fishing, but it is also the wettest stretch of the year, with saturated ground and occasional severe weather. Summer is warm, humid, and busy, especially on weekends around Sullivan Lake and Shakamak. Fall is often the most comfortable season for RV travel: cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong color in the oak-hickory woods. About two-thirds of the campsites at Shakamak are in a wooded area, offering cool shade in summer and strong fall colors in autumn. Many private and county parks scale back services after Labor Day, so check hours before arriving. Winter camping is limited. Shakamak State Park is open year round, but pools and some facilities close. Sullivan County Park & Lake offers year-round slip camping with water, electric, and sewer, while primitive and improved tent areas typically close in the off season. Prairie Creek Park campgrounds run from April through early November.

Sites near Oaktown range from primitive tent pads to gravel back-in sites with 30 and 50-amp service. Sullivan County Park & Lake offers 30 and 50-amp service, water and electric hookups, restrooms and showers, fire rings, a boat ramp, dump stations, and lake swimming, with a typical maximum site length around 40 feet. Rigs longer than that should confirm fit in advance. Prairie Creek Park has about 42 modern sites divided into two sections, with shower houses, restrooms, and a dump station. Most sites are 30-amp electric, with a couple of 50-amp pads. Shakamak offers a mix of electric, full-hookup, non-electric, and cabin sites across wooded loops. Expect Eastern Time, humid summers, mosquitoes near the lakes, and cell service that is generally usable but variable in wooded loops. Do not transport untreated firewood across county lines.
