Campgrounds and RV parks near Oolitic, IN

Monroe Lake, located 6 miles south of Bloomington, is the largest lake in Indiana and supports fishing, hiking, picnicking, water recreation, and bird and eagle viewing. The recreation area spans nearly 10,750 acres of water within a 23,952-acre property, with two sandy beaches and nine boat launch ramps for fishing, boating, and waterskiing. Three trails at Paynetown, including the BlueBird, Tree Trek, and Whitetail routes, wind through the surrounding woodland. Spring Mill State Park has four interpretive facilities: the Pioneer Village, Nature Center, Grissom Memorial, and Twin Caves Boat Tour. The park sits on the Mitchell Karst Plain, a landscape riddled with caves, sinkholes, and underground rivers. Bloomington adds Indiana University’s campus, Fourth Street restaurants, and Oliver Winery. Bedford and Mitchell cover limestone quarry history, local diners, and hardware for last-minute camp supplies.

Peak camping runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Lakeside sites at Paynetown and the family resorts book out earliest, especially on holiday weekends and during Indiana University football and move-in weekends, when Bloomington fills quickly. Early to mid-May and mid-to-late September are quieter windows with mild weather still favorable for swimming and hiking. Spring brings the region’s wettest stretch. Thunderstorms and occasional tornado activity are possible, and lake levels fluctuate with runoff. Fall delivers reliable color through October in the Hoosier hardwoods, with cool nights that suit campfires. Most Indiana DNR properties turn off water, close modern restrooms, and winterize full-hookup sites from November through April, though camping is still available at a reduced rate at almost all locations, with water and other facilities turning back on between mid-March and late April depending on forecasted temperatures. Full amenities are available May through October each year. Snow and sub-freezing nights are common from December through February.

Paynetown offers 226 electric sites with 30-amp electric and water hookups, pull-through sites, and a dump station, plus showers, flush toilets, a camp store, playgrounds, and two swim beaches. It can get busy on summer weekends, so families seeking quiet may prefer weekdays or shoulder-season stays. Spring Mill State Park offers full-hookup and electric campsites for RV and tent camping, with modern restrooms, showers, a camp store, and access to hiking trails, a Nature Center, picnic areas, and a swimming pool. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Lake Monroe delivers pull-through RV sites, pools, a splash-ground, a jumping pillow, and character visits. Pack insect repellent. Ticks and mosquitoes are common in the woodlands around Monroe Lake through the warm months.
