Campgrounds and RV parks near Spencer, IN

McCormick's Creek State Park is the main draw, with a limestone canyon, a waterfall, a nature center, a swimming pool, and a network of hiking trails ranging from easy paved paths to rugged creek-bed routes. Wolf Cave, Twin Bridges, and the historic stone arch bridge add geological and historical interest, and the Canyon Inn anchors the park's central area. Cagles Mill Lake at Lieber State Recreation Area offers boating, a beach, a boat launch, and fishing for bass, catfish, and bluegill. Nearby Cataract Falls, the largest waterfall by volume in Indiana, features upper and lower drops on Mill Creek and a covered bridge. Lake Monroe, southeast of Spencer, adds larger-scale boating and access to Hoosier National Forest trails. Bloomington is a short drive for restaurants, groceries, and Indiana University sights.

Spring runs cool and wet, with heavy rain common in April and May. Trails can be muddy, creek levels run high, and the McCormick's Creek waterfall is at its most dramatic. Campgrounds are open, though modern restrooms and showers may be limited early in the season if freezing weather threatens. Summer is the busy season. Days are hot and humid, thunderstorms are frequent, and weekend sites at state parks and the Jellystone resort fill early, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Reserving several weeks to several months ahead is standard for summer weekends. Fall brings cooler nights, drier weather, and peak color in October across the hardwood forests of Owen and Monroe counties. It is often the best window for RV travel: comfortable temperatures, lower bug pressure, and easier last-minute availability midweek. Winter camping is limited; water is typically shut off at Indiana state parks from November into mid-March or April, and some services are reduced, so travelers should verify site availability and access before booking a cold-weather trip.

State park campgrounds around Spencer are wooded, with mixed hardwood cover, gravel or asphalt pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Electric hookups are common; full hookups are less common at state properties and more typical at private resorts. Modern restrooms, showers, and dump stations are standard at the larger campgrounds. Roads inside McCormick's Creek State Park are curvy with limited shoulders, and some sites suit shorter rigs better than 35-foot-plus motorhomes. Cell service is spotty at Lieber and in the more remote loops, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is wise. Expect wildlife such as deer and raccoons, secure food at night, and plan for humid summer evenings with mosquitoes. Pets are allowed on leash at Indiana DNR properties.
