Camping near Vevay, Indiana
Vevay is a small Ohio River town in Switzerland County, southeastern Indiana, roughly an hour from Cincinnati and Louisville. It sits along the Ohio River as the county seat of Switzerland County, with a population of 1,741 at the 2020 census. The town was first settled in 1802 by Swiss immigrants who intended to cultivate grapes and produce wine, and it was named after the Swiss town of Vevey. The historic downtown is walkable, and the surrounding hills, farmland, and river make Vevay a practical base for RV travelers touring the Ohio River Scenic Byway.
Campgrounds near Vevay range from riverfront RV parks to state-park camping across the river in Kentucky. Rivertown Campground sits in town along the Ohio River, while Follow The River RV Resort is a short drive away in Florence, Indiana. Drakes Ridge Rustic Nudist Retreat offers an adults-only alternative in the rural hills nearby.
Across the Ohio River in Carrollton, Kentucky, General Butler State Resort Park and 2 Rivers Campground put travelers within easy reach of Vevay while adding state-park amenities and river-confluence scenery. The hilltop resort sits where the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers meet and is named for General William Orlando Butler.
Things to do around Vevay
The Ohio River anchors most activity: fishing, boating, and paddling are the core draws, and the Ohio River Scenic Byway passes directly through town. The byway links Vevay with Madison and other small river towns lined with antique stores, bed and breakfasts, and restaurants. Downtown Vevay includes small museums, diners, and an art center.
Day trips are easy. Clifty Falls State Park near Madison features waterfalls and rugged hiking trails. Belterra Casino Resort in Florence, Indiana, Big Bone Lick State Historic Site in Kentucky, and the wineries around Switzerland County round out common stops.
At General Butler State Resort Park, campers can fish or paddle on the lake and hike or mountain bike the trail system. The park offers more than five miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, plus fishing and paddle-boating on 30-acre Butler Lake.

Peak RV season runs from late spring through early fall. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly at riverfront parks like Rivertown Campground and Follow The River RV Resort, and reservations are strongly recommended. Most developed campgrounds in the area take reservations, especially during summer weekends and holidays, and some seasonal parks operate warm-season only while others remain open year-round.
Spring brings the wettest weather and the possibility of Ohio River flooding, which can affect low-lying riverbank sites. Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color along the river valley. Fall color draws visitors in October, when the hardwoods along the lake reach peak foliage at General Butler.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at their campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly for available resources. Winter stays are quieter, with heated bathhouses still available at General Butler. Some private parks near Vevay remain open year-round with reduced services.
How to book campgrounds near Vevay
Private parks around Vevay, including Rivertown Campground and Follow The River RV Resort, take reservations directly through their websites and through booking platforms such as Campspot and Good Sam. Book summer weekends and holiday stays well in advance, since riverfront sites and full-hookup pads are the first to sell out.
For General Butler State Resort Park, reservations go through the Kentucky State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance. There is a one-night minimum stay during the week at all Kentucky state parks.
Before booking, confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and any river-flood advisories with the campground directly, especially in spring.
What to expect on the ground
Vevay-area campgrounds skew rural and small-town. Expect a mix of gravel and concrete pads, full or partial hookups at private parks, and electric-plus-water at state park loops. Rivertown Campground has around 44 sites with full hookups, 20/30/50 amp service, laundry, and a dump station. Follow The River RV Resort offers full hookups on all sites with 20/30/50 amp service, a pool, laundry, and accommodates big rigs. General Butler has electric hookups for RVs and a mix of back-in and pull-through sites.
Cell coverage is generally usable but variable in the river valley and hollows. Campground Wi-Fi receives mixed reviews, so a hotspot or Starlink helps if remote work matters.
Grocery, fuel, and basic supplies are available in Vevay and Carrollton. Larger stores and services require a drive toward Madison, Lawrenceburg, or across the river into Kentucky.

Driving an RV in and around Vevay is genuinely relaxing. State Road 56 hugs the Ohio River with gentle curves and beautiful bluff views, traffic is light, and there are no mountain passes or steep grades like you'd find further south. Watch for narrow shoulders on rural county roads, occasional deer at dawn and dusk, and one low-clearance railroad underpass on the north end of town (stick to SR 56 and you'll avoid it). Spring flooding can briefly close river-level sections of SR 156, so check INDOT TrafficWise before heading out. Pro tip: avoid the Markland Dam bridge at sunrise when fog can roll in off the river.

Most motorhomes include a TV and DVD player, and many hosts now add WiFi hotspots, solar panels, or onboard generators as options. Larger Class A and Class C units usually have slide-outs that dramatically expand living space. in.gov/tourism/How do payments and security deposits work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. A security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip, with the amount set by the host and shown clearly before you book, and it's released a few days after dropoff assuming there's no damage or extra cleaning needed. Returning the RV clean, with the waste tanks emptied and the gas tank filled to its starting level, is the easiest way to avoid deductions. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at both pickup and dropoff, it's the smartest 60 seconds you'll spend on your trip.
