Campgrounds near Bellevue, Iowa
Bellevue sits on the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa's Jackson County, roughly a half-hour south of Dubuque. The town is a compact riverfront community anchored by Lock and Dam 12 and framed by limestone bluffs, making it a common base for RV travelers exploring the Upper Mississippi corridor.
Camping options cluster within a short drive. Bellevue State Park sits atop a 250-foot limestone bluff with views over the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife Refuge, Lock and Dam 12, and the town of Bellevue, and its Bellevue State Park Dyas Unit Campground is the closest public option. Palace Camp Ground and Vel Terra Campground offer additional sites nearby, while Coconut Cove RV Resort provides a full-amenity resort experience within reach.
Across the Mississippi in Illinois, the 2,500-acre Mississippi Palisades State Park sits near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers in northwestern Illinois and adds a second large public campground within about a 45-minute drive.
Things to do near Bellevue
The Mississippi River drives most activity. Boating, fishing, and eagle-watching near Lock and Dam 12 are seasonal draws, and in winter bald eagles concentrate to feed near the open waters below the dam. Hiking is strong on both sides of the river. The Dyas Unit encompasses almost 4 miles of foot trails, scenic overlooks, and a stream with a wide variety of aquatic life and other wildlife, and the Nelson Unit adds an enclosed nature center and butterfly sanctuary.
Across the river at Mississippi Palisades State Park, travelers can spend a full day on roughly 15 miles of trails, including strenuous routes that pass rock formations with named lookouts like Twin Sisters and Indian Head. Coconut Cove RV Resort adds an on-site aqua park, pools, and a beachfront bar for families who want more amenity-driven days between drives.

30° / 14°F 31 mmCold and snowy; Dyas Unit campground closed in winter
The RV season runs roughly late April through mid-October. At Bellevue State Park, the campground is closed each year from November 1 through March 31, and park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings open by May 1 and start closing down shower buildings and turning off water around mid-October, so shoulder-season visitors should plan for cold-weather conditions and reduced facilities.
Summer is peak. Weekends fill fast at both Bellevue State Park and Mississippi Palisades, and first-come, first-served walk-in sites turn over quickly during summer holidays. Biting insects can be a factor in low areas, with gnats and mosquitoes most noticeable in spring and early summer.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower crowds, and strong color along the bluffs, with mid-October a common target for foliage. Winter camping is limited: Bellevue State Park's campground is closed in winter, and Coconut Cove operates seasonally.
How to book a campsite
Iowa state park sites are booked through the Iowa DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. The Dyas Unit campground at Bellevue State Park is 100 percent reservable and a reservation is required, and reservations can be made for today and up to 3 months in advance, so summer weekends should be locked in as soon as the window opens.
Mississippi Palisades State Park also books through ReserveAmerica under the Illinois DNR system, with reservations available from 3 days before arrival up to 6 months in advance. Private options like Palace Camp Ground, Vel Terra Campground, and Coconut Cove RV Resort book directly through their own websites or phone lines, and holiday weekends at Coconut Cove often sell out well in advance.
What to expect on arrival
Public campgrounds in the area are rustic to mid-tier. At Bellevue State Park, the Dyas Unit has 46 camping units with 31 electrical hookups, modern rest rooms, showers, and a sanitary dumping station, but there are no individual water or sewer hookups at sites. Big rigs should check length limits before booking and note that access is via a gravel road off Highway 52.
Mississippi Palisades is larger, with 241 campsites, 110 offering electric hookups, three buildings with showers and flush toilets, water stations located throughout the campground rather than at each site, and sanitary dump stations. Coconut Cove RV Resort offers full-hookup sites and resort amenities. Firewood should be bought locally: moving firewood can spread emerald ash borer and other pests, and firewood should not be transported across state lines.
