Campgrounds near Bondurant, Iowa
Bondurant sits on the northeast edge of the Des Moines metro, placing RV travelers within a short drive of both city attractions and countryside campgrounds. The area serves as a practical base for families visiting Adventureland, the Iowa State Fair, or the paved trail network that threads through central Iowa. Interstate 80 runs just south of town, and most nearby parks sit within about fifteen minutes of an interchange.
Options range from full-service private RV parks to a state park campground. Griff's Valley View RV Park and Campground is located near Altoona and features 142 full hookup, concrete-padded campsites that are big rig friendly, with 21 pull-through sites. Adventureland Campground is open to the public from May through the end of October, and all campsites include water, electricity, and sewer. River Oaks RV Park offers another private-park option in the metro.
Cutty's Des Moines Camping Club sits on timber-filled acreage in Grimes and provides access to several hundred sites for its members. Walnut Woods State Park is one of the only parks close to Des Moines with a designated campground, and it protects Iowa's largest stand of black walnut trees.
Things to do near Bondurant
Adventureland is the anchor attraction on this side of the metro, with a full slate of rides and the Adventure Bay water park for hot summer days. Families staying at Adventureland Campground can walk directly to the front gate by way of a bridge on the west side of the campground. Prairie Meadows Casino and the Outlets of Des Moines are minutes away in Altoona.
Outdoor activity centers on trails and rivers. Griff's Valley View sits adjacent to the paved Chichaqua Valley Trail, which runs right between the campground and the office. At Walnut Woods, hikers can follow more than two miles of trails through wooded bottomland along the Raccoon River, and visitors can fish from the riverbank or launch a boat from the ramp on the west end of the park. Birdwatching is popular year-round, with more than 90 species identified along park trails and the river.

Central Iowa has a strongly seasonal climate, and campground availability follows it. Adventureland Campground is open to the public from the month of May through the end of October. Cutty's typically opens in April and closes at the end of October, so it does not offer year-round camping. Private parks like Griff's Valley View tend to stay open through cold months for travelers passing through on I-80, and Walnut Woods State Park accepts reservations year round.
Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with additional pressure during the Iowa State Fair in August. At Walnut Woods, reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer months when few sites remain open to walk-ups. On Iowa state park sites, from May 1 to October 31 campers must stay at least two nights for a weekend, and Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day holiday weekends require a three-night stay.
Spring brings variable weather, thunderstorms, and rising rivers. Fall shoulder weeks in September and early October offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier same-week bookings at most parks.

How to book a site
Booking channels vary by park. Iowa DNR campgrounds, including Walnut Woods State Park, accept reservations year round through the Iowa State Parks reservation system on reserveamerica.com. Reservation windows differ by site type: some standard sites require booking at least four days ahead and allow up to twelve months in advance, while others can be booked same day and up to three months out. Walnut Woods accepts same-day reservations until 10 pm CST.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Adventureland takes reservations by phone or online, with check-in beginning at noon and check-out ending at 11 a.m. Cutty's is member-only, and members can drive in and select a site without a reservation. For Griff's Valley View and River Oaks, call ahead during summer weekends and the State Fair when sites fill quickly.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of concrete-pad and gravel sites, most with full hookups at private parks and a smaller share of full hookups at the state park. At Walnut Woods, all campsites have electric service and 8 sites offer water, sewer, and electric hookups, but the campground does not have showers. Sites are shady with concrete pads, and all campsites are available by reservation only.
Griff's Valley View provides 50-amp and 30-amp hookups, water and sewer, pull-through sites for big rigs, internet access, laundry, clean shower houses, and a pet-friendly policy. Adventureland has an outdoor swimming pool behind the hub, and fires are only allowed in designated fire pit areas.
Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 counties in Iowa, so buy firewood locally near the park and burn it all during the stay. Cell service is generally reliable across the metro.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Bondurant, IA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Bondurant, IA?
An RV rental in Bondurant fits a wide range of budgets. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run about $125 to $225, and Class C motorhomes average $175 to $275 per night, with Class A rigs higher. Spring and fall offer the best value for a cheap RV rental in Bondurant, since demand peaks during the Iowa State Fair in August and the Knoxville Nationals races. Pro tip: book midweek in May or September for lower nightly rates, and use the price filter on RVezy to compare options before you commit.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bondurant,%20IowaWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Bondurant, IA?
Great news: your regular Iowa driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Bondurant. The State of Iowa does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes used for personal travel, no matter the size. On RVezy, you simply need to be 25 or older and verify your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), which costs under $20 from your local auto club. That's it, you're cleared to hit I-80 and start your Iowa adventure.
iowadot.gov/mvd/driverslicense/driver-license-classificationsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Bondurant RV rental?
Yes. Every booking on RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 65 with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV, and you choose your coverage level during checkout. Roadside assistance is built in, so if you get a flat near Big Creek State Park or a dead battery at a campground in Bondurant, help is one phone call away. It removes the biggest worries first-time renters have and makes renting from a local host feel just as safe as a traditional rental company.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every booking, so you can plan your Bondurant RV trip with confidence. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and refund amounts depend on how far in advance of your trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credit. Full details are available in the RVezy Help Center, and customer support can walk you through your options before you confirm dates.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Bondurant, IA?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on the trip. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Bondurant options, and you can find them in seconds by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Once you've got the rig, central Iowa is a dream for dogs: Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt just north of Bondurant has miles of leashed trails through restored prairie, and Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in nearby Prairie City lets you walk pups along the bison and elk auto tour route. Most local campgrounds, including Cutty's Des Moines and Timberline Campground in Waukee, welcome leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and breed details.
fws.gov/refuge/neal-smithCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Bondurant?
Yes, RV delivery Bondurant is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters. Many hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your campsite at Yellow Banks Park, Thomas Mitchell Park, or Saylorville Lake, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to instantly see hosts who offer this service, along with their delivery radius and per-mile fee. Pro tip: delivery is a game changer if you're flying into Des Moines International Airport (DSM), which is just 20 minutes from Bondurant, since you can skip towing entirely and start your trip relaxed.
flydsm.com/How does mileage work, and can I get unlimited mileage on my rental?
Mileage is flexible in Bondurant: hosts set their own mileage policies, and many offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. You'll see the exact mileage policy on each listing before booking, so there are no surprises. For a quick weekend at Lake Red Rock (45 minutes south) or Ledges State Park (45 minutes northwest), the standard included miles are usually more than enough. Planning a bigger loop through the Loess Hills or up to the Mississippi River? Filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host to negotiate a custom package. Either way, you'll know your travel range up front.
iowadnr.gov/Places-to-Go/State-ParksWhat are the best campgrounds near Bondurant, IA?
You've got fantastic options within 30 minutes of Bondurant. Cherry Glen and Prairie Flower Campgrounds on Saylorville Lake (run by the US Army Corps of Engineers) offer full hookups and lake views. Thomas Mitchell Park in Altoona has 67 electric sites tucked into 197 wooded acres along Camp Creek. Yellow Banks Park southeast of town sits on bluffs over the Des Moines River with electric sites and easy trail access. Griff's Valley View RV Park in Altoona is a top-rated full-hookup choice right near Adventureland. For a true state-park feel, Ledges State Park near Boone (about an hour away) is unbeatable. Book Saylorville sites through Recreation.gov early, they fill fast for summer weekends.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2624When is the best time of year for a Bondurant RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping Bondurant, with warm days, green prairies, and every campground fully open. Summer highs in July and August average 85°F with humid evenings perfect for campfires, while September delivers crisp 70°F days and noticeably thinner crowds. Spring (April to early June) brings wildflowers and migrating birds at Neal Smith Refuge, though pack rain gear since Iowa thunderstorms can roll through fast. Winters dip into the teens with snow and ice, so most central Iowa campgrounds close from late October to April. Insider tip: aim for the second week of September, the State Fair crowds are gone but the weather is still gorgeous.
weather.gov/dmx/climateI've never rented an RV before. Will I actually be okay?
Yes, first time renting an RV is easier than most people expect. On RVezy, every host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery covering the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, and dump valves. You can message your host any time before, during, or after your trip. Central Iowa is genuinely first-timer friendly: roads around Bondurant are flat, well-marked, and traffic outside Des Moines rush hour is light. Start with a one-night shakedown at nearby Thomas Mitchell Park, then expand your range. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick demo video the day before pickup so you arrive prepared.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or problem on the road?
Help is built in. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat on I-80 east of Bondurant or a dead battery at Lake Red Rock, one phone call gets a technician dispatched. You can also message your host directly through the app for questions about their specific RV. The RVezy customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. The Des Moines metro also has plenty of RV-friendly service centers in Altoona and Grimes, so parts and repairs are rarely far away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Bondurant, IA?
Bondurant sits in the middle of some of the Midwest's best RV territory. Top RV road trip routes from Bondurant include Lake Red Rock and Pella's Dutch downtown (about 45 minutes south, 40 miles), Ledges State Park near Boone (about 1 hour, 55 miles) for sandstone cliffs and oak forests, the Loess Hills Scenic Byway along Iowa's western edge (about 3 hours, 170 miles), the Amana Colonies (about 2 hours, 110 miles) for German heritage and craft shops, and the Mississippi River bluffs around Dubuque (about 3.5 hours, 200 miles). Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but US interstate travel is generally fine: confirm any out-of-state allowance with your host before booking.
traveliowa.com/trip-ideas/What kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost?
Realistic expectations make budgeting easy. Class C motorhomes around Bondurant typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs 6 to 10 mpg, campervans 14 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg when towing). Iowa gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, often $2.90 to $3.40 per gallon for regular unleaded, with stations like Casey's (an Iowa original) and Kum & Go all over the metro. Pro tip: fill up in Bondurant or Altoona before heading out, prices in smaller towns south toward Red Rock can creep up. Plan roughly $50 to $90 a day in fuel for a typical Class C trip.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bondurant?
Earlier is better, but you've got more flexibility than most destinations. For Saylorville Lake campgrounds (Cherry Glen, Prairie Flower, Acorn Valley), book through Recreation.gov 4 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, especially around the July 4th holiday and the RAGBRAI bike ride week. Iowa State Park reservations through the Iowa DNR system open up to 3 months in advance and Ledges and Lake Ahquabi fill quickly. Private parks like Adventureland Campground and Griff's Valley View RV Park usually have midweek openings even in peak season. Pro tip: if you're visiting during the Iowa State Fair (mid-August), book the State Fair Campground the moment reservations open in spring, it sells out within days.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2624What are the local driving conditions like around Bondurant?
Driving an RV around Bondurant is refreshingly easy. The area is flat to gently rolling, and Highway 65, Highway 330, and I-80 are wide, well-maintained, and RV-friendly. Avoid downtown Des Moines streets during weekday rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.), and watch for low railroad underpasses in older neighborhoods if you are in a tall Class A. Summer thunderstorms can bring strong crosswinds, so check the National Weather Service Des Moines forecast before long drives. Winter brings ice and blowing snow, which is why most renters travel April through October. Insider tip: gravel county roads east of Bondurant are scenic but rough, stick to paved routes in larger rigs.
weather.gov/dmx/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Bondurant?
Central Iowa campgrounds are well equipped. Most parks near Bondurant offer 30 and 50 amp electric, potable water fill stations, and sanitary dump stations, with full hookups common at private parks like Griff's Valley View RV Park and Cutty's Des Moines. Saylorville Lake's US Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds have modern restrooms with hot showers, paved pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Dump stations are also available at Thomas Mitchell Park and Walnut Woods State Park. Iowa State Parks generally provide electric-only sites, so plan to fill fresh water on arrival and dump on the way out.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2624What's actually inside a typical RV rental in Bondurant?
More than you'd think. A typical motorhome rental Bondurant comes fully equipped: a real bed (queen or king in most Class C and Class A units), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a private bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC plus furnace), and a dinette that often converts to extra sleeping space. Most rigs also include a TV, USB ports, and at least one generator or solar setup for off-grid power. WiFi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot, others rely on your phone's data. Every motorhome has DOT-rated seatbelts for travel. Pro tip: filter listings by sleeps count and amenities on RVezy so you only see RVs that match exactly what your group needs.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Bondurant offer some genuinely useful add-ons that make trips smoother. Common extras include linen and kitchen kits ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $30), portable grills, generators for boondocking, bike racks, and pet packages with bowls and tie-outs. Many hosts offer delivery within 25 to 50 miles of Bondurant for a per-mile fee, plus setup at your campsite. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meeting spot near I-80 or Highway 65. Mileage policies vary by host (typical: 100 to 150 free miles per day, with options to prepurchase more or get unlimited). Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit, you'll arrive to a trip that's basically a turnkey vacation.
traveliowa.com/things-to-do/camping/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: RVezy handles everything through the platform, with no cash or checks exchanged with the host. You pay your booking total (rental, fees, and any add-ons) at the time of reservation using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately during your trip to cover potential damage beyond what the protection plan covers, and it is released back to your card shortly after a smooth return. The exact amount is shown before you confirm. Pro tip: take a thorough walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, it is the easiest way to avoid deposit disputes and keep your Bondurant trip stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat insider tip do locals know about RVing near Bondurant?
Here is a local secret: the High Trestle Trail crosses a stunning half-mile illuminated bridge about 13 stories above the Des Moines River valley near Madrid (about 30 minutes northwest of Bondurant). It is one of the Midwest's most photogenic spots, especially after dark when the steel frames light up blue. Park your RV at the trailhead in Woodward or Madrid, unload bikes, and ride to the bridge at sunset. Pair it with a stay at Ledges State Park or Don Williams Recreation Area for an unforgettable two-night loop. Most visitors miss this because it is not on the typical Iowa tourist map.
