Campgrounds and RV parks near Buffalo, IA

The Mississippi River drives most outdoor activity here. Fairport State Recreation Area provides two boat ramps, courtesy docks, and prime viewing of towboats, migratory birds, and river wildlife. Anglers need a valid Iowa fishing license to fish the Mississippi. Hikers head to Wildcat Den State Park for trails through sandstone bluffs, past features like Steamboat Rock, Fat Man's Squeeze, and the Devil's Punch Bowl, with a stop at the working Pine Creek Grist Mill. The park spans roughly 423 acres and works well as a day trip from a Buffalo-area base. In the Quad Cities, families can add the Rock Island Arsenal, the John Deere Pavilion in Moline, the Buffalo Bill Museum in LeClaire, and the Quad City Botanical Center. The Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday keeps kids busy on-site with a heated pool, adults-only hot tub, water spray park, mini golf, and a stocked fishing lake.

The camping season along this stretch of the Mississippi runs roughly from mid-spring through late fall. Iowa state park campgrounds at Wildcat Den and Fairport are fully reservable, with peak operations from around May through early October. Fairport closes for winter and typically reopens in mid-March, with water services resuming in early May. Wildcat Den's campground closes January through March, with an off-peak window in April and peak season from May through early October. Summer is the busiest window. Expect hot, humid days, frequent thunderstorms, and the highest demand for riverfront electric sites, so book well ahead for holiday weekends. Spring brings mild temperatures, blooming timber, and the region's wettest stretch, with May typically the peak precipitation month. Fall is a strong shoulder-season choice: cool mornings, warm afternoons, hardwood color along the bluffs, and easier weekend availability. Winter camping is limited, with public campgrounds closed and only some private parks operating on a reduced basis.

Public sites in the area lean rustic. Wildcat Den has non-modern vault toilets, potable water, and no electrical hookups or showers, while Fairport offers 42 electric sites, 30 and 50 amp service, water hookups at most sites, modern showers, and a dump station. Fairport sits directly along Highway 22 and an active rail line, so light sleepers should factor in train noise. Private parks are geared to RV travelers. Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday has 30 and 50 amp full hookups, long pull-throughs, a heated pool, adults-only hot tub, and a 50-acre fishing lake on more than 150 acres. Haven Hills provides 40 full-hookup RV slips, cabins, glamping yurts, a large splash pad, and disc golf across 155 acres. Iowa has confirmed emerald ash borer statewide, so buy firewood locally near the campground and burn it on site rather than hauling it in.
