Camping near Charter Oak, Iowa
Charter Oak is a small city in Crawford County along the East Soldier River in western Iowa, positioned within reach of the Loess Hills region. The town sits about an hour inland from the Missouri River corridor, placing renters within driving distance of both state park lakeshores and privately run RV parks along the Interstate 29 corridor.
Most trip planning for this area centers on the Loess Hills landscape, a formation of wind-deposited soil found in western Iowa and along the Missouri River that produces the ridged terrain and prairie remnants the region is known for. Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground sits on wooded acreage near Preparation Canyon State Park, while Lewis And Clark State Park anchors Blue Lake near Onawa.
Onawa / Blue Lake KOA Holiday and On-Ur-Wa RV Park cover the full-hookup, family-oriented side of the market, and Shelby Country Inn and RV Park adds an option to the south near Interstate 80. Together these campgrounds give renters short-drive access to lake recreation, hiking, and the scenic byway.
Things to do near Charter Oak
Blue Lake at Lewis And Clark State Park is the main water draw in the area. The lake has a swimming beach, boat access, and a full-size reproduction of the Lewis and Clark keelboat on display, built by local volunteers and park staff. The park sits at the site where the expedition camped in August 1804.
Hiking is concentrated in the Loess Hills, with trails in Preparation Canyon State Park and the surrounding state forest units reaching along the ridges. Public hunting is available in the wildlife area adjacent to Lewis And Clark State Park.
Other stops include the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Onawa, the June Lewis and Clark Festival with reenactments and a keelboat display, and the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway drive.

The main camping window in western Iowa runs from mid-April through mid-October. Lewis And Clark State Park's campground accepts reservations April through October and is closed November through March. Park staff generally aim to have water, showers and the dump station open by mid-April and shut them down again in mid-October, so early-April and late-October arrivals should expect that modern facilities may not be running.
Onawa / Blue Lake KOA Holiday operates April 15 through October 15 weather permitting, with the pool open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. All holiday weekends at the KOA require a three-night minimum stay, so long weekends fill early.
Winter is the shoulder for private options only. Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground stays open year-round, making it one of the few local choices for cold-weather stays. Summers bring warm, humid weather and frequent thunderstorms, and late spring through August is the wettest stretch.
How to book campgrounds near Charter Oak
Iowa state parks use the Iowa DNR reservation system, run through ReserveAmerica. Lewis And Clark State Park has all campsites reservable, with bookings taken up to three months in advance. A cancellation fee applies to all cancellations, and cancellations the day before arrival forfeit one night's camping fee plus the cancellation fee.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Onawa / Blue Lake KOA Holiday books through the KOA site and enforces a three-night minimum on all holiday weekends. Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground reserves through CampLife, and On-Ur-Wa RV Park and Shelby Country Inn and RV Park take reservations directly with the operator.
For peak summer weekends, book the KOA and state park sites as soon as the three-month window opens. The entire state of Iowa is under state and federal firewood transport quarantines due to emerald ash borer, so plan to buy firewood locally rather than hauling it in.
What to expect on the ground
Lewis And Clark State Park's campground sits along Blue Lake's shoreline, with electric hookups, some full-hookup sites, modern restrooms, showers and a trailer dump station. Cottonwood trees shade many of the lake-side sites, though privacy between spots is limited and the layout skews heavily toward RVs and trailers rather than tents.
Onawa / Blue Lake KOA Holiday runs long pull-thru sites with water, sewer and electric, and pull-thrus up to 95 feet accommodate larger rigs. Amenities include a seasonal pool, playground, paddle boats and fun-cycle rentals.
Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground sits on 32 acres of hilly woodland, meadow and native prairie, minutes from Preparation Canyon State Park and nearly 12,000 acres of public land open for hiking and hunting. Terrain in the Loess Hills is rugged with uneven ground and loose soil, so hikers should plan footwear accordingly.

Winters are genuinely cold (highs in the 20s and 30s, occasional sub-zero stretches), so most hosts park their RVs from late November through March. For a longer adventure, the 350-mile route to the Badlands National Park makes a perfect 5 to 7 day trip. Pro tip: the Loess Hills Byway is one of only two places on Earth (the other is in China) with these unique wind-deposited bluffs, so plan a sunset stop at Murray Hill Scenic Overlook.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2310What should I budget for fuel on an Iowa RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger line items, but Iowa gas prices typically run below the national average, which keeps your Charter Oak RV trip budget-friendly. Expect 8 to 10 mpg for Class C motorhomes, 10 to 14 mpg for Class B campervans, and 12 to 18 mpg for trucks pulling travel trailers. With Iowa pump prices often in the $3.00 to $3.40 range, a 500-mile loop in a Class C costs roughly $175 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest stations along I-29 and US-30, and fill up in larger towns like Denison or Onawa rather than at small-town pumps where prices can run 20 to 30 cents higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Charter Oak?
For Iowa state parks like Prairie Rose, Lewis and Clark, and nearby Black Hawk, reservations open exactly 90 days in advance through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) online system, and summer holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) sell out within minutes of opening. For Crawford County parks like Yellow Smoke and Nelson Park, you can typically book 30 to 60 days out with more flexibility. Private RV parks usually accept reservations 6 to 12 months ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 90 days before your target date at 7 a.m. Central, then book your Iowa DNR site the moment the system opens for the best Yellow Smoke or Prairie Rose lakefront spots.

The Loess Hills do offer some scenic ridge driving with curves and elevation changes, fun but manageable in any RV class. Watch for occasional gravel side roads, slow-moving farm equipment in spring and fall, and sudden summer thunderstorms with strong crosswinds. Winter brings ice and blowing snow, which is why most rentals operate April through October. Mileage policies vary by listing, with most including 100 to 150 free miles per night. travel.iowa.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host in cash. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, with the amount depending on the RV and the protection level you choose at checkout. The deposit is released back to your card after the trip ends with no damage or extra cleaning needed. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video with your host at pickup and again at return, noting any pre-existing scratches or interior wear. It is the best way to protect your deposit on any RV rental in Iowa.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Charter Oak RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, traveling across state lines is welcomed on most RVezy rentals, so your Charter Oak launchpad opens up the Midwest and beyond. South Dakota's Black Hills, Nebraska's Sandhills, Minnesota's lake country, and Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks are popular multi-state routes. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: if you are planning a longer interstate loop, share your full route with the host upfront. They can confirm coverage, suggest mileage packages, and share insider tips from their own road trips.
