Campgrounds and RV parks near Columbus Junction, IA

The Iowa and Cedar rivers are the main draw. Anglers target catfish, bass, and panfish, and paddlers use quieter stretches of the Cedar for float trips. Nearby county recreation areas add hiking loops, mountain-bike trails, and equestrian routes through hardwood timber and restored prairie. Families often build a day around the Louisa County Conservation preserves, the Columbus Junction Swinging Bridge, and short drives to Wapello or Muscatine for shops and river access. Farther afield, Lake Darling State Park to the west has a swimming beach, an accessible fishing pier, and a paved fishing trail along the south shoreline. For a longer outing, travelers can point south to Mount Pleasant, where Midwest Old Threshers Campground hosts the Old Threshers Reunion over Labor Day weekend, with steam engines, trolleys, and live music.

The prime RV season in this part of Iowa runs from late April through mid-October. Late spring brings green-up and higher river flows, and summer delivers warm days well suited to swimming, paddling, and evening campfires. Humidity is common in July and August, and afternoon thunderstorms can move through quickly. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch. September and October bring cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and hardwood color along the Iowa and Cedar river valleys. Weekends around peak color and the Old Threshers Reunion fill early, so booking ahead matters. From November 1 through March 31 all Iowa state park campsites are walk-in only, with a few named exceptions, and many private parks in the area close or reduce services for winter. Iowa DNR staff generally turn water on and open shower buildings by around May 1 and begin shutting them down in mid-October, so shoulder-season travelers should confirm gate access, water availability, and dump-station status before arrival.

Sites in this part of Iowa range from primitive walk-in spots to modern pads with 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and full hookups. Midwest Old Threshers Campground provides 30-amp and 50-amp electrical sites plus full-service hookup sites with gravel pad, sewer, water, and 50-amp service, along with on-site dump stations, showers, and a campground store. Terrain is gentle, with grass and gravel pads common. Tree cover varies from open agricultural land to shaded river-bottom hardwoods, which affects satellite reception and solar performance. Cell coverage is generally good near town and along the river valleys, spottier deep in county timber. Check-in at Iowa state park reservable sites is 4:00 pm. Bring bug spray in summer, layered clothing in spring and fall, and confirm rig-length limits with the campground before towing in.
