Campgrounds and RV parks near Donnellson, IA

Fishing and paddling dominate the local outdoor scene. Lakes within Shimek State Forest hold bass, channel catfish, and panfish, and the Donnellson Unit includes a boat ramp and walk-in access at Shagbark Lake. Battle of Athens State Historic Site offers camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, and boating, with more than a mile of Des Moines River frontage, a small lake, interpretive programs, and free tours of the Thome-Benning House and other Civil War-era buildings. Across the Mississippi, Nauvoo, Illinois, adds historic-district walking tours, LDS heritage sites, and trails and boating at Nauvoo State Park around 13-acre Horton Lake. The Donnellson Unit of Shimek has a nature trail, two picnic areas, and 6.2 miles of hiking trails, and the wider forest is open to hiking and hunting outside camping areas.

The core camping season across public land in this region runs spring through late fall. Shimek State Forest's small non-modern campgrounds, including the Donnellson Unit's White Oak Campground on Shagbark Lake, are typically usable April through October, with pit latrines and hand-pump hydrants that campers should confirm for off-season stays. Battle of Athens State Historic Site keeps its campground open year-round with primitive and electric sites, but modern restrooms and showers at the enclosed shelter, roughly a mile from the campground, run only during the on-season. Winter access varies. At Nauvoo State Park, water hookups shut down during winter months, leaving only a hydrant near the bathhouse for filling containers, and the bathhouse itself closes seasonally. Spring flooding is a real consideration. High water on the Mississippi and Des Moines Rivers can affect access to lowland campgrounds and river-frontage sites, so campers should check ahead with the managing agency during spring and early summer when flood risk is highest.

Hookup levels vary widely. Nauvoo State Park accommodates RVs up to about 60 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections on many sites, while Battle of Athens offers a mix of basic and electric campsites, with both 30-amp and 50-amp hookups on the electric loop. Shimek State Forest's Donnellson Unit sites are non-modern with pit latrines and no showers. Big-rig access is possible but not universal. The Nauvoo State Park campground layout can confuse first-time visitors since interior drives lack clear marking, and longer rigs may find maneuvering challenging in the tighter areas. Most sites sit under tree cover with ample shade, which also means mosquitoes during warmer months. Cell service varies significantly across the region, with more wooded areas offering limited connectivity.
