Campgrounds and RV parks near Dunlap, IA

The Loess Hills dominate the local landscape. These wave-like ridges are a landform that reaches its fullest development only in western Iowa and parts of China, and hiking, birding, and fall color drives are the main draws. Preparation Canyon State Park and the wider Loess Hills State Forest provide public-access hiking and hunting acreage close to Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground. Water recreation centers on two options. Prairie Rose State Park sits on a 218-acre lake with a swimming beach, two boat ramps, eight fishing jetties, and about seven miles of multi-use trails open to hiking, biking, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Wilson Island State Recreation Area sits along the Missouri River next to DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, known for its seven-mile oxbow lake, migratory bird viewing, and the Steamboat Bertrand exhibit at the refuge visitor center.

The main Iowa state park camping season runs roughly mid-April through mid-October. The Prairie Rose State Park campground is closed November 1 through March 31, with peak reservable dates from May 1 through October 15. Wilson Island State Recreation Area operates on a similar schedule, accepting reservations from April 15 through October 15. Summer is the busiest period. Lake sites at Prairie Rose fill quickly on holiday weekends, and heat advisories with heat index values above 100 degrees Fahrenheit are not unusual in July and August across southwest and west-central Iowa. Late spring brings the highest rainfall totals and the risk of severe thunderstorms, and May is typically among the wettest months in this area. Shoulder seasons are strong for RV travel. Spring brings mushroom hunting and migratory bird activity in the Loess Hills, while fall delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and color across the wooded ridges. Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground stays open year-round for travelers seeking a quiet off-season base.

Facilities vary significantly between sites. The East Campground at Prairie Rose State Park has electric and full-hookup sites with a modern shower building and restrooms, while the West Campground has electric and non-electric sites with more basic, non-modern facilities. Wilson Island State Recreation Area offers modern showers and restrooms, electric and non-electric sites, and a playground near the shower building. Some private parks are more rustic. Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground has six grassy RV and tent sites with gravel pads and electric hookups that fit rigs up to about 32 feet, though not all pads are equally level. Cell coverage is patchy in the Loess Hills, and firewood should be purchased locally. The entire state of Iowa is under state and federal firewood quarantines due to emerald ash borer, and moving firewood across county or state lines is discouraged.
