Campgrounds and RV parks near Logan, IA

The Loess Hills dominate outdoor recreation in this area. Preparation Canyon State Park is a remote area located in the Loess Hills, with ridges, streams, and hiking trails. The Loess Hills State Forest offers thousands of acres for hiking and cross-country skiing, with a small lake in the Preparation Canyon Unit for kayaking and fishing. Water-based recreation centers on the Missouri River corridor. Immediately north of Wilson Island is the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, which includes a large oxbow lake that provides a fishery and stopover for migratory waterfowl. The refuge visitor center houses the Bertrand Steamboat exhibit. Anglers can pursue bass, catfish, bluegill, and crappie in area ponds, and much of the state forest opens to whitetail and turkey hunting in season.

Western Iowa runs a full four-season calendar, and campground availability tracks it closely. At Iowa state parks and recreation areas including Wilson Island, park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and typically start closing them around mid-October depending on the weather. Modern conveniences such as water, flush toilets, and shower buildings are closed during the winter months. Summer is peak season. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill quickly at state sites, and reservations should be booked as soon as the window opens. Spring brings green-up in the Loess Hills but also the wettest months, so low-lying river sites can be muddy after storms. Fall is a strong shoulder season for cooler nights, migratory bird viewing at DeSoto, and hunting-season access on state forest lands. Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground stays open year-round, giving winter travelers a private-park option when state facilities are closed.

Sites vary widely in this area. Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground has a small number of grassy RV and tent sites with gravel pads and electric hookups suited to mid-size campers. Not all sites are equally level, and each has a picnic table and fire pit. The property does not offer full water or sewer hookups at every site, and the nearest potable water and dump station is at Pisgah City Park, a short drive away. Wilson Island State Recreation Area sits in dense cottonwood bottomland with modern showers and restrooms, nonelectric and electric campsites, youth group sites, and a playground. Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino offers full hookups and paved pads near the casino complex. Emerald ash borer is present in Iowa, and visitors should buy firewood locally rather than transport it across county or state lines.
