Camping near Morning Sun, Iowa
Morning Sun sits in Louisa County in southeast Iowa, within a short drive of the Mississippi and Skunk River corridors. The area draws RV travelers looking for quiet state parks, riverside forest camping, and full-hookup private sites, with several options reachable in under an hour.
The closest developed public campground is Geode State Park, a state park in Henry County managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The 1,640-acre park is built around Lake Geode, a 187-acre lake, and it draws steady weekend traffic from Burlington and the Quad Cities. Crossroads RV Park serves travelers who want a simpler pull-through stop with hookups.
Across the Mississippi in western Illinois, Big River State Forest and Delabar State Park add river-bluff camping to the trip mix. To the west in Mount Pleasant, Midwest Old Threshers Campground offers full-service RV camping on the grounds of the Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Association, tied to the region's agricultural heritage.
Things to do near Morning Sun
Lake Geode anchors most day plans on the Iowa side. The lake offers fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, along with boating and paddling under no-wake regulations, and a swimming beach provides lake access during summer months. A main trail runs from the north end of the lake to the dam, connects to picnic areas, and links with a second trail on the west side, making a full loop of the lake possible.
Rock hunting is a signature draw. Geodes bring rock hounds to the area, and a display of geodes with crystal formations can be seen at the park office, though it is illegal to remove geodes from state parks.
Cyclists can pick up the Southeast Iowa Bike Route, a forty-six mile route that connects Lacey-Keosauqua State Park and Geode State Park. The Mississippi bluffs at Delabar State Park and the sand forests of Big River State Forest add hiking and river views on the Illinois side.

Southeast Iowa runs on a four-season calendar with a defined camping window at most public parks. Geode State Park operates April 1 through December 14, with seasonal closure from December 15 through March 31, so winter RV plans generally shift to private parks or year-round sites at Midwest Old Threshers Campground.
Spring brings green-up, wildflowers, and steady rain that can push river levels up and mud out unpaved sites. Late May through August is peak season, with warm humid days, thunderstorms, and swimming-beach activity at Lake Geode. Popular weekends fill early, so booking ahead is standard.
Late summer is festival time. The signature event is the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, which runs for five days ending on Labor Day weekend. Fall delivers cooler nights, hardwood color across the Skunk and Mississippi valleys, and lighter campground demand into early December.
How to book Morning Sun campgrounds
Iowa state park sites are handled through a single system. All 88 sites at Geode State Park require reservations through iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com, with reservations available up to twelve months in advance and required at least four days ahead of arrival. Check-in is 4:00 p.m. and check-out is 3:00 p.m.
For the Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, camping is booked directly with the association rather than through a state system, and reserved sites go quickly for the Labor Day event window. Illinois-side options at Delabar State Park and Big River State Forest are managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, with reservations handled through Reserve America. Private parks such as Crossroads RV Park book directly with the operator.
What to expect
Geode State Park runs a modern setup for an RV. There are both electric and non-electric campsites, two modern shower buildings, and a sewage dump station in the campground, and two camp pads and restrooms are accessible to the mobility-impaired. Every campsite includes a fire ring and picnic table, with water hydrants distributed throughout the loops.
Expect wooded, rolling terrain rather than open prairie. Cell service is workable but not strong in the tree cover, and lake conditions vary. The lake has experienced extended draining periods, with some reviewers reporting closed beach areas and water quality concerns during their visits, so check current status before planning a swim day.
Midwest Old Threshers Campground is larger and event-driven, with 30-amp, 50-amp, and full-service hookup sites available during the reunion week.
