Campgrounds and RV parks near Onawa, IA

Blue Lake is the main draw. It is a 250-acre oxbow with a sandy swimming beach and a double boat ramp, and no restrictions are placed on motor size, so waterskiing, fishing, and paddling are all common. Anglers target panfish, bass, channel catfish, and northern pike. Ongoing drought has kept lake levels low, and the dock is not currently installed at the boat ramps. On shore, Lewis And Clark State Park has more than 30 acres of picnic grounds, a playground, and an accessible paved lakeshore path, plus a full-size keelboat replica tied to the 1804 expedition that camped at this site. Beyond the lake, the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway runs nearby, offering hiking, ridge drives, and prairie overlooks. Onawa itself has a historic main street, a county museum complex, and a small local theater.

Camping season in western Iowa runs primarily April through October. Lewis And Clark State Park accepts campground reservations April through October and closes November through March, with peak season running May through mid-October and shoulder weeks in late April and late October. Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends and holidays fill quickly at the state park, and waterfront sites go first, so booking several weeks out is wise for Memorial Day through Labor Day. Days are warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms possible and mosquitoes active near the lake and river bottomlands. Spring brings unsettled weather and higher river levels, but campgrounds are less crowded. Fall delivers the most comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and good fishing, though services taper off after mid-October. Winter closes most public campgrounds; only a handful of private RV parks in the area operate year-round, and freezing temperatures can affect water hookups.

Access to Onawa is straightforward. From Interstate 29, take exit 112 and head west on Highway 175 for about three miles to reach the state park, or stay in town for the closer-in RV parks. Roads are paved and suitable for large rigs; Lewis And Clark State Park accepts RVs up to about 80 feet and includes pull-through sites. Expect a mix of electric-only and full-hookup sites at the state park, with modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Verizon coverage is generally reliable. Following recent hazard-tree removal, shade is limited and stumps remain in some areas, so plan for sun exposure and bring awnings or shade shelters. Groceries, fuel, propane, and camping supplies are available in Onawa within a short drive of every listed campground.
