Campgrounds and RV parks near West Burlington, IA

Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Geode inside Geode State Park is known for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, with bank fishing, a swim beach, and trails looping the lake under no-wake boating rules. Rock hounds visit the area for the geodes that give the park its name, though collecting inside the park is not permitted. Along the Mississippi, Delabar State Park has a boat ramp and two docks for river fishing, plus oak-hickory woods where more than fifty bird species have been recorded. Big River State Forest adds the 1.5-mile Lincoln Hiking Trail, the 3.5-mile Big Pines Trail, and a large network of firebreaks used by hikers and equestrians. In town, families can time a visit with Burlington Steamboat Days in early June, the West Point Sweet Corn Festival in early August, or Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant around Labor Day.

The core RV season in southeast Iowa runs from mid-spring through late fall. Geode State Park accepts reservations April 1 through December 14 and closes the campground December 15 through March 31, which sets the practical shoulder-season window for anyone wanting an Iowa state park site nearby. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill first and should be booked well in advance. Late spring and early summer bring the wettest weather, with June averaging the most rainfall of any month and heavy rain events possible along the Mississippi and Skunk River bottoms. River-adjacent campgrounds such as Delabar State Park and Big River State Forest can see access affected during high-water years, so checking road and site status before arrival is smart. Fall is a strong shoulder season: cooler nights, thinning crowds, and hardwood color through the river bluffs. Winter camping is limited on the Iowa side once Geode closes, so cold-weather travelers should confirm availability directly with any park or private operator before arrival.

Geode State Park has both electric and non-electric sites, two modern shower buildings, and a sewage dump station, with two camp pads and restrooms accessible to the mobility-impaired. Sites sit in mixed hardwood cover near the lake, and roads are hardpack with loose gravel, so slow speeds help with dust and traction. Delabar State Park offers tent and trailer sites with 30-amp electric hookups, drinking water, a sanitary dump station, and a jet pump for filling trailers. Sites are wooded and rigs up to about 46 feet have been accommodated, though there is no Wi-Fi and cell service can be spotty. Big River State Forest is closer to boondocking: fire pits and picnic tables at each site, drinking water and picnic shelters near Campbell Slough and Putney's Landing, and generally no site hookups. Private parks like Duck Haven RV Campground and Nauvoo RV Park round out the mix for travelers who want simple hookup sites near town or the Nauvoo historic district.
