Campgrounds and RV parks near Whiting, IA

Blue Lake is the local hub for water recreation. The lake carries no motor-size restrictions, has a double boat ramp, and supports fishing for panfish, bass, channel catfish, and northern pike, with a sandy swimming beach on the state park side. On shore, families use the accessible paved lakeshore path and mowed hiking trails through the park's grassland. The visitor center at Lewis And Clark State Park houses a full-size reproduction of the expedition's keelboat and opens seasonally, roughly spring through early fall. Off the water, the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway runs the length of the bluffs east of town, Blackbird Bend Casino sits about five minutes from Onawa, and the annual Lewis and Clark Festival in June brings a keelboat display, quilt show, and reenactments to the area.

The camping season in this part of Iowa is tightly bounded. The Lewis And Clark State Park campground is closed November 1 through March 31 and takes reservations April through October, with peak season running May 1 to October 15 and shoulder rates in April and late October. Onawa / Blue Lake KOA Holiday runs on a similar April 15 to October 15 window, weather permitting, and its pool operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Summer is the busiest stretch. Holiday weekends carry a three-night minimum at the KOA, and lakeside sites at the state park fill first when the weather warms and fishing picks up. Check the Iowa DNR page before a state park stay in case of temporary closures for hazard tree removal or lake conditions. Shoulder months, late April, September, and early October, are cooler and quieter, and better for hiking the Loess Hills without heat or biting insects. Winter camping options are limited to a small number of year-round private sites.

Sites in this area lean toward flat, grassy or gravel pads with mature cottonwood shade near the lake. Lewis And Clark State Park offers a mix of electric and full-hookup sites along the lakeshore, with modern restrooms and showers and a trailer dump station. The KOA offers pull-throughs up to 95 feet, a swimming pool in season, playground, lake access for fishing and paddling, and a camp store. Cell coverage is generally usable on Verizon; other carriers can be spottier near the bluffs east of the river. Mosquitoes can be heavy near the lake in mid-summer, so pack repellent. Groceries, fuel, and basic camping supplies are available within about ten miles at Onawa. Expect a family-friendly, low-key atmosphere: quiet evenings, level roads inside the state park, and short drives between the campground cluster and the Loess Hills.
