Campgrounds and RV parks near Woodbine, IA

The Loess Hills National Scenic Byway runs near town and links a chain of ridges, overlooks, and small parks, winding through western Iowa's loess hills along a route that generally parallels Interstate 29. At Wilson Island State Recreation Area, campers can access the neighboring DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, which includes a seven-mile-long oxbow lake that provides a fishery and stopover for migratory waterfowl. Prairie Rose State Park adds lake-based recreation: boating on the 218-acre lake, swimming at the beach, and canoeing or kayaking, with any size boat motors allowed at no-wake speeds. Roughly seven miles of multi-use trails at Prairie Rose are open to hiking, and portions are used for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter.

Western Iowa has a four-season continental climate, and state-park camping windows reflect that. Wilson Island opens April 15 and operates through October 15, and the Prairie Rose Campground is closed each year from November 1 through March 31. Peak booking pressure at Prairie Rose falls between early May and mid-October. Shoulder-season RVers should note that park staff generally aim to have water on and shower buildings open by mid-April and start closing them down around mid-October, depending on weather. Frost-free hydrants may be available for off-season camping, but campers should call the park to confirm. Plan self-contained if traveling in early April or later October. Winter travel is limited but not impossible. Loess Hills Hideaway is open year-round, offering rustic accommodations for outdoor enthusiasts, and Wilson Island's trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in season. Bald eagles are commonly seen along the Missouri River corridor and perched in Wilson Island's cottonwoods in winter.

Loess Hills Hideaway is compact and rustic, with a small number of grassy RV and tent sites, gravel pads, and limited-amp hookups suitable for shorter rigs. Sites are not all equally level, and each includes a picnic table and fire pit. Water and sewer service on-site is limited, so travelers should arrive with full tanks and use the nearest public dump station before returning. Wilson Island offers a more traditional state-park layout with 44 sites total, including 31 with electric hookups, 10 non-electric sites, and three large youth group areas, all served by modern restrooms with showers and a dump station. Prairie Rose's East Campground carries full-hookup pads suitable for larger rigs, while the West Campground leans quieter with electric and non-electric sites. Public hunting is permitted in season at Wilson Island outside developed areas, so wear blaze orange on fall hikes.
