Campgrounds and RV parks near Ellinwood, KS

The headline attraction in town is the Ellinwood Underground Tunnels beneath the Historic Wolf Hotel. Guided tours visit the original 1887 Tom Drake's Harness Shop, Jung's Barber Shop and Bathhouse, and two stretches of original tunnels that once linked the Main Street business district. Tours require advanced reservations and no tours run on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Birding is the main outdoor draw. At least 320 species of birds have been recorded, and the area is critical habitat for whooping cranes, peregrine falcons, least terns, and piping plovers, with thousands of sandhill cranes stopping on spring and fall migrations. The Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway curves around Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge for 76 miles, making a full-day loop easy from any campground. Wilson Lake adds swimming beaches, boat ramps, and the Switchgrass mountain bike trail.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for both weather and wildlife. Spring and fall migrations bring the largest number of birds at one time, with migrating ducks and cranes peaking in late March and early April, shorebirds peaking from late April to late May, and sandhill and whooping cranes visiting in March or April and again in October or November. Daytime temperatures in April, May, September, and October are comfortable for touring the byway pull-offs and walking through town. Summer is hot and windy. July sees the highest temperatures, with an average high near 93°F and a low near 71°F, and high winds are a routine feature of the central Kansas landscape. Severe thunderstorms are possible from late spring through summer, so watch forecasts and secure awnings. Winters are cold and quiet. Municipal and private RV parks in Great Bend and Ellinwood typically stay open year-round, but Wilson State Park facilities scale back and some hookups may be limited. Great Bend receives relatively little snow, with an annual average of about 12 inches, but freezing overnight lows are routine from December through February.

Terrain is flat to gently rolling prairie with cottonwood-lined creeks. Camping spots near Ellinwood sit within the Arkansas River valley at approximately 1,778 feet elevation. Big-rig access is generally good on U.S. 56, U.S. 281, and I-70, and most private parks offer pull-through sites with 30/50-amp service. Cell coverage is uneven outside town and around the wetlands. Mobile coverage varies significantly by carrier and location, so downloading offline maps is smart before heading into Cheyenne Bottoms or Quivira, where paved and gravel wildlife-drive loops have no services. Expect wind. Level with care, retract awnings when leaving the site, and stow loose gear. Bring bug spray in spring and summer, layers for cool mornings, and a jacket for the tunnel tour, which stays cool underground year-round.
