Campgrounds and RV parks near Jetmore, KS

HorseThief Reservoir is the recreation hub. Activities on and around the water include swimming, boating, jet skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, walleye, and crappie, plus hiking, hunting, archery, and stargazing on shore. Stand-up paddleboard, kayak, and canoe rentals are available at the office during the warm season, and the reservoir hosts events such as Zombie Paintball on October weekends and a July 4 celebration with fireworks over the water. Dodge City, about 30 minutes south, is the cultural anchor. Boot Hill Museum recreates an Old West street with gunfight reenactments and historic buildings, and the town supports walking tours, trolley tours, a casino, and Dodge City Raceway Park. Ford County State Fishing Lake adds quiet fishing and birdwatching for those wanting a low-key half-day.

The prime RV window in western Kansas runs from late April through September. HorseThief Reservoir takes utility-site reservations from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, with the biggest demand around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends. Summer daytime highs commonly reach the low 90s Fahrenheit, and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent from late May into July. Spring brings the wettest weather of the year, with May typically the peak rainfall month, and severe-weather season overlaps with peak green-up. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel: warm days, cool nights, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter camping is possible but bare-bones. Outside the Memorial Day to Labor Day window, sites at HorseThief switch to first come, first served, and one bathroom is kept open year-round since the park is open for camping 365 days a year. Snow accumulation is modest, but wind, cold snaps, and freezing overnight lows are routine, so RVers should be prepared to winterize water systems on short notice.

Sites near Jetmore are open, sunny, and windy. HorseThief has utility campsites plus open primitive space, with two bathroom and shower houses, a beach, floating docks, and a dump station; shade is limited because the trees planted at the sites are still maturing. Sun shelters cover picnic tables at many, but not all, sites. Ford County State Fishing Lake is genuinely primitive: gravel pads, picnic tables, fire pits, vault toilets, and no potable water. Several sites are unlevel, so it suits self-sufficient rigs and tent campers more than large motorhomes. In Dodge City, Gunsmoke RV Park has around 89 full-hookup sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp service, roughly 60 pull-throughs, a pool, laundry, and a gated entry, though front-row sites pick up highway and train noise. Sites in the 50 to 80 range at the back are quieter and worth requesting.
