Campgrounds and RV parks near Abilene, KS

In town, the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home anchor a walkable historic district that also includes the Dickinson County Heritage Center, the Greyhound Hall of Fame, and the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad excursion train. Old Abilene Town recreates the cattle-drive era with seasonal gunfight reenactments. Outdoor activity concentrates around Milford Lake, the largest reservoir in Kansas. A 19,000-acre wildlife area on the west side and upper end of the reservoir supports many species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and aquatic life. The Milford Nature Center and Milford Fish Hatchery, both located below the dam, offer interpretive exhibits, and the lake hosts a large influx of bald eagles in winter. Boating, fishing for walleye and catfish, and hiking round out the options.

Peak RV season in central Kansas runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Milford State Park loops such as Sunset Ridge and Eagle Ridge fill on weekends and around holidays. Reservable sites at the state park can be booked months in advance, so July 4 and other summer weekends should be locked in early. Summer heat is real: afternoon highs regularly reach the low 90s Fahrenheit, and severe thunderstorms with hail and tornadoes are possible from late spring through midsummer. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows. April and May bring wildflowers and green prairie, along with the wettest months of the year, with May averaging the most rainfall. September and October cool off with steady, sunny weather and lighter camping traffic, making midweek stays easy to secure at private parks like Covered Wagon Campground and Chapman Creek RV Park. Winter is quiet. Many private parks stay open for full-hookup stays, and Milford Lake draws a large influx of bald eagles, which is a draw for viewing trips even when overnight camping demand drops.

Terrain around Abilene is gently rolling prairie and cropland, with cottonwood-lined creeks. Sites at private parks such as Covered Wagon Campground and Walt's Four Seasons Campground and Country Store are generally level, grass or gravel, and set up for easy pull-in access from I-70. Chapman Creek RV Park sits in a small-town setting east of Abilene. At Milford State Park, expect a mix of shaded and open sites. Sunset Ridge offers shaded sites with covered picnic shelters and grills, with views of Milford Lake. Several Eagle Ridge sites are back-in with hookups on the passenger side rather than the driver's side, so a longer power cord and water hose can help. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town and along I-70, and thinner in the wildlife area west of Milford Lake. Wind is a near-constant factor on the plains, so awnings should be retracted when leaving a site.
