Campgrounds near Lyons, Kansas
Lyons sits in Rice County in central Kansas, on Highway 56 roughly halfway between Great Bend and McPherson. The town follows the route of the Santa Fe Trail and serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Smoky Hills, the Sand Hills region, and the Arkansas River corridor.
Camping options fan out in several directions. Langley Point at Kanopolis State Park sits northeast in the Smoky Hills area, with a reservoir and utility hookups. Sand Hills State Park lies south near Hutchinson and offers full-service RV sites among dunes, wetlands, and prairie. Closer to town, Lighthouse Landing RV Park and Cabins and Hitchin' Post RV Park handle shorter stays and travelers passing through on Highway 56.
For RVers heading west toward Great Bend and the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, Cottonwood Grove RV Park Great Bend, Kansass provides another hookup option. The mix of state park and private-park inventory means travelers can pair natural settings with easy in-and-out sites on longer routes.
Things to do near Lyons
In town, the Coronado Quivira Museum covers the Quivira culture, the Coronado expedition of 1541, the Santa Fe Trail, and early Rice County settlement. Highway 56 traces the historic trail route, with markers and interpretive stops along the way.
Outdoor activity centers on the two nearby state parks. Kanopolis State Park has more than 30 miles of trails open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, along with a 3,500-acre lake and a 12,500-acre wildlife area. The park also features sandstone canyons and Buffalo Track Canyon Nature Trail. Sand Hills State Park offers about 14 miles of interconnected trails winding through dunes 10 to 40 feet high, grasslands, and wetlands. West of Lyons, the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge is a strong stop for birding, especially during shorebird and crane migrations.

How to book campsites near Lyons
Kansas state park campsites at Kanopolis and Sand Hills are reserved through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks website, which uses the ReserveAmerica platform. Utility hookup sites are reservable in advance, while many primitive sites are first-come, first-served. A Vehicle Permit or valid State Park Passport is required for daily entry, and a Camping permit is required for overnight stays.
Private parks such as Lighthouse Landing RV Park and Cabins, Hitchin' Post RV Park, and Cottonwood Grove RV Park Great Bend, Kansass are typically booked directly with the operator by phone or website. For spring and summer weekends, especially around the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, book several weeks ahead. Cancellation and change fees apply to state park reservations, so confirm dates before locking in.
