Camping near Marquette, Kansas
Marquette sits in central Kansas, in McPherson County on the eastern edge of the Smoky Hills. The town is small and quiet, and most RV travelers use it as a base for Kanopolis Reservoir, the Smoky Hills byway, and the trail networks in Kanopolis State Park to the northwest.
Campground options in the area range from full-hookup private parks to reservoir-side public sites. Langley Point at Kanopolis State Park offers utility sites along the water with access to the park's swim beach and horse and hiking trails. Closer to town, Dan's RV Park and Mustang RV Park cater to travelers wanting a straightforward overnight stop, while Mcpherson RV Ranch And Horse Motel appeals to riders hauling horses. Battlehill RV Park rounds out the nearby private options.
Expect open prairie, cottonwood-lined creeks, and the sandstone bluffs that define Kanopolis country. Distances between campgrounds and services are short, and I-135 is a straight run south to McPherson and north to Salina.
Things to do around Marquette
Kanopolis State Park is the main draw. The Horsethief Canyon and Alum Creek trails wind through sandstone cliffs, small caves, and native grassland, and the park is open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Kanopolis Reservoir supports boating, fishing for walleye and channel catfish, and a sandy swim beach at the state park.
In town, the Kansas Motorcycle Museum and the Marquette murals give a short afternoon stop. Coronado Heights, a sandstone castle-style shelter on a bluff north of Lindsborg, is a short drive south and offers a wide view of the Smoky Valley. Lindsborg itself, known as Little Sweden, adds shops, galleries, and Swedish bakeries within easy reach.

Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of Kansas. May and June bring green prairie and the strongest wildflower display, but they also fall inside peak severe-weather season, with thunderstorms, hail, and tornado watches common on the plains. Travelers should monitor NWS Wichita forecasts and know the tornado shelter location at their campground.
Summer runs hot. July and August routinely push daily highs into the 90s Fahrenheit, and afternoon heat indices can climb higher. Shaded sites are limited, and pull-through spots with 30 or 50 amp service are worth booking early for weekend use.
September through early November delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and prime hiking weather in Kanopolis. Winter camping is possible but limited: many private parks reduce services, and state park utility loops may operate with partial amenities and winterized restrooms.
How to book campgrounds near Marquette
Sites at Langley Point and other Kanopolis State Park loops are reserved through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks reservation system, which opens a rolling booking window several months out. A separate Kansas state park vehicle permit is required in addition to the camping fee and can be added at checkout or bought at the park office.
Private parks in the Marquette area, including Dan's RV Park, Mustang RV Park, Mcpherson RV Ranch And Horse Motel, and Battlehill RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends, Kanopolis fishing tournaments, and Lindsborg festival dates fill early, so booking two to three months ahead is prudent for summer and fall visits.
What to expect at Marquette campgrounds
Roads into Marquette and out to Kanopolis are paved and RV-friendly, with a few gravel spurs on the last approach to some reservoir loops. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and along I-135 but can drop in the canyons and back trails of the state park.
Wind is a constant factor on the central Kansas plains. Slide-outs, awnings, and satellite dishes should be secured, and high-profile rigs may want to plan travel days around forecast gusts. Ticks and chiggers are common in tallgrass areas from late spring through early fall, and mosquitoes pick up near the reservoir after rains.
Groceries, fuel, and propane are available in McPherson, Lindsborg, and Salina, all within a short drive. Marquette itself has limited services, so restocking on the way in is the easier plan.
