Campgrounds near McPherson, Kansas
McPherson sits in central Kansas at the junction of Interstate 135 and US Route 56, roughly an hour north of Wichita and 30 minutes south of Salina. The area suits RV travelers looking for a quiet Great Plains base with easy highway access, small-town amenities, and quick drives to reservoir recreation in the Smoky Hills.
Campground options close to town lean toward small, privately owned RV parks rather than large resorts. The climate features large temperature swings across the seasons, ranging from very hot summers to chilly winters, with moderate annual precipitation. That pattern shapes when parks fill up and which sites stay open year-round.
Mustang RV Park, Mcpherson RV Ranch And Horse Motel, Dan's RV Park, and Battlehill RV Park are the closest options to the city center. Travelers with horses will find the Mcpherson RV Ranch And Horse Motel useful for combined stabling and hookups. For state-park camping with a reservoir, boat ramps, and hiking, Kanopolis State Park lies within reasonable driving distance and includes a 3,000-acre lake set in more than 22,000 acres of rolling hills, bluffs, and woods with over 25 miles of trails.
Things to do near McPherson
The McPherson Museum and downtown district give families a half-day of low-key sightseeing, and the local aquatic center and golf course fill an afternoon when the heat builds. Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, north of town near Canton, is a popular short drive for viewing bison and elk on the tallgrass prairie.
Outdoor recreation picks up west of the city. Kanopolis State Park offers a reservoir, sandstone canyons, a prairie dog town, over 25 miles of trails, and the adjacent Smoky Hill Wildlife Area used for hunting and fishing. Horsethief Canyon is the signature hike, with sandstone bluffs and short slot-canyon sections that appeal to kids.
Anglers target white bass and crappie at Kanopolis Lake, while cyclists use the county roads and the Prairie Trail Scenic Byway for long, flat rides.

Central Kansas has a strongly seasonal climate, and RV planning should account for it. Summers in McPherson are hot, humid, and mostly clear, and winters are very cold, snowy, windy, and partly cloudy. Spring brings the wettest weather and the highest severe-storm risk, including thunderstorms, hail, and occasional tornadoes across the region.
The most comfortable stretches for touring are April, May, September, and October, when daytime temperatures generally sit in a pleasant range and rainfall is moderate. Summer is the busiest camping season at reservoirs like Kanopolis, and weekend sites with hookups fill early. May is typically the wettest month, averaging around 125 mm of rain over about 11 rainy days.
Winter camping is possible at private RV parks that keep utilities running, but state-park use drops sharply as temperatures fall and snow arrives. Snow in the area usually begins around December and ends by March. Travelers heading out in shoulder seasons should watch overnight lows and pack for freeze-protection of hoses and tanks.
How to book
Private RV parks close to McPherson, including Mustang RV Park, Mcpherson RV Ranch And Horse Motel, Dan's RV Park, and Battlehill RV Park, are typically reserved by phone or directly through the operator's website. Small parks may hold only a handful of pull-through sites, so contacting the office ahead of holiday weekends is important.
For Kanopolis State Park and other Kansas state parks, campsites are booked through the state's reservation partner. Reservations are accepted via telephone, on the internet at ReserveAmerica, or in person at the park office on a first-come, first-served basis, and can be made up to one year in advance. Sites with utility hookups can be reserved ahead of time, while primitive campsites are usually available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
What to expect
Expect small, level, gravel-surfaced parks in and around McPherson, with pull-through sites, 30 and 50 amp service, and basic laundry or dump facilities at most locations. These parks cater heavily to overnight I-135 travelers and to workers, so noise from the highway or nearby rail lines is common.
At Kanopolis and other Kansas state parks, sites vary widely. Utility hookups are available for RVs, with full-hookup, electric-only, and non-utility options, plus areas known for lake access and primitive tent sites. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town and patchier out at the reservoir.
Wind is a constant on the plains. Awnings should be stowed when unattended, and higher-profile rigs may see side gusts on US-56 and I-135. Summer humidity and mosquitoes are real; bring repellent and shade.

Peace of mind comes standard. Every RV rental in McPherson booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered for eligible damage while exploring central Kansas. At checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, each with different deductibles and coverage limits. Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not the individual host, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. After that window, refunds depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels, you receive a full refund or travel credit. You will see the full policy clearly during checkout and again in your booking confirmation, so book early to secure the best motorhome rental McPherson has available knowing you have a built-in safety net.

Yes, your pup is welcome on the adventure. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental McPherson hosts offer, then check each listing for any pet fee (often $25 to $75 per stay) or breed notes. Once you arrive, leashed dogs are welcome at local private RV parks, and they will love sniffing around Lakeside Park or the Meadowlark Trail just outside town. Maxwell Wildlife Refuge requires dogs to stay leashed near the bison enclosure for safety. Pack a tie-out, water bowl, and proof of vaccination, and you are set for a tail-wagging Kansas getaway.
ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks/Pets-In-ParksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in McPherson?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery McPherson-wide, meaning they will tow or drive the rig to a local RV park, state park site, or even a private property and set it up with hookups before you arrive. Just toggle the Delivery filter when searching, enter your destination address, and you will see exact delivery fees (often a few dollars per mile round trip within McPherson County). This is gold for first-time renters: no learning to back up a 30-foot trailer on day one. Show up, get a walkthrough, and start your Kansas adventure stress-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=McPherson%2C+KansasHow far can I drive on an RV rental from McPherson?
You have plenty of road to explore. Most McPherson hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles available at roughly $0.35 to $0.50 each, and some listings offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage option, perfect for a longer Kansas road trip. From McPherson you are about 60 miles north of Wichita, 30 miles south of Salina via I-135, and roughly 175 miles to Kansas City. Planning to head west to Colorado or south into Oklahoma? Filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host before booking to discuss a higher cap. Either way, you are never boxed in.
ksdot.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near McPherson, KS?
You have fantastic options within a short drive. The best campgrounds near McPherson include private RV parks in and around town offering full hookups and 30/50-amp service, plus Kanopolis State Park (about an hour northwest) for lakeside camping and canyon hiking, and Old Mill Campground in nearby Lindsborg, the heart of Kansas's Little Sweden. For a quieter prairie experience, McPherson State Fishing Lake near Canton offers primitive sites close to Maxwell Wildlife Refuge. Book private parks 2 to 4 weeks ahead for weekends, especially during local festivals, and reserve state park sites through the Kansas State Parks system well in advance for peak summer dates.
ksoutdoors.com/State-ParksWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from McPherson?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for a McPherson RV trip. Mid-April through early June brings 60 to 80 degree days, blooming prairie wildflowers, and the famous Lindsborg Svensk Hyllningsfest energy in odd-numbered years. September and October deliver 55 to 78 degree weather, golden cottonwoods along the Smoky Hill River, and far fewer bugs. Summer (July and August) climbs into the 90s with humidity and occasional severe thunderstorms, so plan early-morning drives and lean on the RV's AC at hookups. Winter camping is doable at year-round parks if you book a winterized rig with heated tanks.
weather.gov/ict/I have never driven an RV before. Is renting one in McPherson really doable?
Totally doable, even if it is your first time renting an RV. McPherson is one of the friendliest places to learn: wide, flat streets, light traffic, and easy I-135 on-ramps make practicing a breeze. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, the propane system, and waste tanks, so you leave pickup feeling confident, not confused. Nervous about driving at all? Choose a host who offers delivery and they will bring the rig directly to your campsite. Start with a smaller Class C or a campervan rental McPherson hosts offer, and you will be a pro by day two.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I have a breakdown or flat tire on my McPherson RV trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US-56, a dead battery at Kanopolis Lake, or a lockout in downtown McPherson is one phone call away from help. The dispatch team coordinates towing, tire service, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and lockout assistance anywhere in the U.S. Save the roadside number in your phone before pickup, take a photo of your RV's VIN, and you will never feel stranded. Your host is also a quick message away through the RVezy app for questions unique to their rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from McPherson, KS?
You are sitting in a perfect launch pad for an RV road trip from McPherson. Top routes include Wichita (about 60 miles south via I-135, roughly 1 hour) for Old Town and the zoo, Lindsborg's Little Sweden (about 20 miles north, 25 minutes) for Coronado Heights and Swedish bakeries, Kanopolis State Park (about 50 miles northwest, 1 hour) for canyon hiking and lakeside camping, Salina (about 30 miles north) for the Smoky Hill Museum, and Kansas City (about 175 miles east, roughly 3 hours) for big-city BBQ. travelks.com/How much should I budget for fuel on a McPherson RV trip?
Kansas keeps fuel costs friendly. Gas prices in McPherson typically run 15 to 30 cents below the national average, often around $2.90 to $3.30 per gallon. A travel trailer towed by a half-ton truck averages 10 to 13 mpg, a Class C motorhome runs 8 to 12 mpg, and a campervan rental can hit 16 to 20 mpg. For a 300-mile weekend loop (say McPherson to Kanopolis to Lindsborg and back), budget roughly $80 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fuel up at the Casey's or Love's near I-135 exit 60 before heading west, where stations get sparser past Lyons.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near McPherson?
You have more flexibility here than in most destinations. Private RV parks around McPherson can often accommodate walk-ins midweek, but lock in weekends 2 to 4 weeks ahead, especially around the All-Schools Day Parade in May and Lindsborg's fall festivals. Kansas State Park sites at Kanopolis or Sand Hills should be reserved through the official Kansas State Parks reservation system 30 to 90 days out for peak summer weekends. Holiday weekends fill fastest, so plan accordingly and consider booking an RV rental in McPherson with delivery if you want to skip the towing learning curve.
ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks/ReservationsWhat are driving conditions like around McPherson?
Driving an RV around McPherson is refreshingly straightforward. The town sits at the intersection of I-135 and US-56 with flat terrain, wide lanes, and minimal congestion, ideal for first-timers and big rigs alike. Watch for sudden Kansas crosswinds on I-135 between McPherson and Salina; gusts of 25 to 40 mph are common in spring and fall and can push high-profile rigs. Severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings peak from April through June, so download the FEMA app and pull off at a sturdy structure or designated shelter if sirens sound. Winter brings occasional ice storms; check KanDrive.gov before heading out from November through February.

The process is simple and secure. When you book on RVezy, you pay the trip total (nightly rate, fees, taxes, and your chosen renter protection plan) through the platform using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, separate from your booking payment, and is not actually charged unless there is damage, excess mileage, or a late return. As long as you bring the rig back in the agreed condition, the hold is released after your trip. Document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and drop-off to avoid surprises and keep your McPherson trip stress-free.

Many hosts allow it, just message before booking to confirm and to discuss any documentation needed at the border. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Popular cross-state runs from McPherson include the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve loop into the Flint Hills and a southern route to Oklahoma's Great Salt Plains, both easy weekend adventures.
