Campgrounds near Ness City
Ness City sits in the rolling High Plains of western Kansas, roughly halfway between Hays and Dodge City. RV travelers use it as a base for reservoir camping, prairie drives along US-283 and K-96, and stops on the way to or from I-70. The nearest developed camping is at Cedar Bluff Reservoir to the north and HorseThief Reservoir to the south, both within about an hour by road.
Cedar Bluff State Park is split into two areas on opposite shores of the reservoir, with Page Creek - Cedar Bluff State Park on the south shore and Bluffton - Cedar Bluff State Park on the north. Page Creek is the closer approach from Ness City and leans more primitive, with 36 utility sites mixed among tree-shaded and open areas, while Bluffton is the developed side with the majority of utility loops, cabins, and the park office. HorseThief Reservoir, nine miles west of Jetmore, offers water and electric sites, primitive sites, yurts, and cabin lodging in a full-recreation setting.
Closer to the interstate, WaKeeney KOA Journey provides a full-hookup stop along I-70, and LaCrosse City Park serves as a low-key municipal option along US-183.
Things to do near Ness City
Water recreation drives most trips in this area. Cedar Bluff Reservoir supports boating, jet skiing, swimming, and fishing for walleye, crappie, white bass, wipers, largemouth bass, and channel catfish, with a swim beach and a covered, accessible fishing dock on the Bluffton side. The Bluffton area also has a BMX track, sand volleyball, horseshoes, shore-side basketball, and a playground.
HorseThief Reservoir adds 3D archery, disc golf, mud volleyball, a small climbing wall, hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, plus stand-up paddleboard, kayak, and canoe rentals through the park office. It is locally known as the Sunset Capital of Kansas and draws star-gazers thanks to wide, dark skies.
Off the water, day trips include Threshing Machine Canyon and the juniper-lined limestone bluffs west of the Page Creek Area, the Barbed Wire Museum in La Crosse, and the historic downtown of Ness City itself.

Peak season on the High Plains runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Summers are hot and mostly clear, with afternoon thunderstorms possible, and this is when reservoir campgrounds fill fastest. Cedar Bluff and HorseThief both see their busiest weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, so utility sites at these lakes should be booked well ahead for holiday windows.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with lower crowds, milder temperatures, and better wildlife viewing. Spring brings the wettest weather of the year and the risk of severe thunderstorms, so travelers should watch forecasts and note that Cedar Bluff has concrete umbrella-style storm shelters at some Bluffton sites. Fall pairs cooler days with the region's pheasant and deer seasons, which increases weeknight demand at HorseThief cabins.
Winters are cold, windy, and snowy at times, but HorseThief keeps camping open year-round with a bathroom open through winter, Cedar Bluff cabins remain available, and the WaKeeney KOA operates as a highway stop through the shoulder months.
How to book campgrounds near Ness City
Cedar Bluff State Park reservations at both Page Creek and Bluffton are handled through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks online reservation system, with a separate daily vehicle permit required on top of the site fee. Utility loops and cabins should be locked in early for summer weekends and any holiday, and cabins can be booked up to one year in advance.
HorseThief Reservoir accepts utility-site reservations by phone through the park office. The operator notes that utility bookings are recommended from May through September and required around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends. From October through April, utility sites at HorseThief revert to first come, first served.
WaKeeney KOA Journey books through the KOA website or app, and LaCrosse City Park operates as a small municipal campground where travelers should call the city or self-register on arrival.
What to expect at Ness City campgrounds
Sites in this region tend to be open, grassy, and exposed, with limited natural shade outside of the tree-lined loops at Cedar Bluff and the shaded parks in town. Wind is a constant factor on the High Plains, so awnings should be retracted when leaving the site and larger rigs should plan for gusty crosswinds on approach.
Cell coverage is generally serviceable near I-70 and the KOA, weaker at Page Creek and along back roads to HorseThief. Some access roads, particularly in the Page Creek Area, are gravel and can be dusty or rough for larger rigs and toads. Water levels at Cedar Bluff fluctuate, which can move the shoreline well away from waterfront sites in dry years.
Expect clean shower houses and dump stations at the state park and KOA, vault toilets in primitive areas, and mosquitoes near the water at dusk during summer.
