Campgrounds and RV parks near Riverton, KS

The main draw is the Kansas segment of Historic Route 66. Nelson's Old Riverton Store first opened its doors on March 20, 1925, a year before Route 66 was created, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. West of town, the Brush Creek Rainbow Bridge, a single-span concrete Marsh arch bridge, is the sole surviving bridge of this type on the former Route 66, and it can still be crossed on a short one-way loop off the current highway. Nearby Galena hosts Cars on the Route, a restored service station tied to Route 66 folklore, and Baxter Springs has an Independent Oil and Gas service station that now serves as a Route 66 visitor center. The Spring River and Empire District dam impoundments offer fishing and paddling. Within an hour, RV travelers can reach Grand Lake O' the Cherokees in Oklahoma for boating and lake recreation.

Riverton has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot, humid, and wet, with peak average temperatures in July reaching a high near 89°F and a low near 70°F. Thunderstorms are common from late spring through midsummer, and May is the wettest month, with rain falling for nearly 17 days and typically over five inches of precipitation. Southeast Kansas lies within Tornado Alley, and severe weather awareness is important through spring and early summer. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. April, September, and October generally bring mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity, with fall color along the Spring River corridor and Grand Lake shoreline. Grand Lake is also known for winter eagle viewing near Pensacola Dam. Winters are short but can be sharply cold, with January lows near freezing and occasional snow. Measurable snowfall generally occurs between December and March. Some private parks and public campground loops reduce services in winter, so calling ahead is worthwhile.

Expect a rural, small-town setting rather than a resort atmosphere. Riverton itself has limited services beyond the historic store, a post office, and the Empire District power plant, so most groceries, fuel, and dining runs happen in Baxter Springs, Galena, or Joplin. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the Route 66 corridor and along US-400 and US-69. Sites at the nearby private parks trend toward back-in and pull-through gravel pads with full hookups. Public sites at Grand Lake typically offer 30- or 50-amp electric with water hookups, and dump stations are available. Shade varies by campground and season. Roads through Riverton are two-lane and easily handled in a rental RV. The historic Brush Creek Bridge is one-way and carries a 10-ton weight limit, so larger rigs should stay on the main highway.
