Campgrounds and RV parks near Brownsville, KY

Cave tours are the anchor activity. Mammoth Cave National Park runs ranger-guided tours ranging from easy walking routes to strenuous crawls through undeveloped passages, and tours frequently sell out in peak season, so booking in advance through Recreation.gov is standard practice. Above ground, the park offers hiking, biking, and paddling on the Green and Nolin Rivers, plus horseback trails accessible from Maple Springs Group - Mammoth Cave National Park and from the private horse camps outside the boundary. Nolin Lake State Park adds boating, a sand beach, and fishing where bass, walleye, catfish and crappie are the prize catches. For rainy days or a break from nature, Beach Bend Family Campground sits next to an amusement park with a water park and racetrack in Bowling Green.

The main park campgrounds inside Mammoth Cave National Park operate on a seasonal window. Maple Springs Group and the Mammoth Cave Campground take reservations from March through November, while the primitive Houchin Ferry Campground stays open year-round. Nolin Lake State Park is listed as open year round on the Kentucky State Parks reservation system, though the state notes it cannot guarantee water or other resources at its campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible. Spring and early summer are the wettest stretches, with April through July each averaging over four inches of rain, so campers should expect thunderstorms and occasional trail mud. Summer brings heat and humidity, plus the heaviest cave-tour demand and near-full campgrounds on weekends. Fall delivers the most reliable camping weather: cooler nights, lower humidity, and October is one of the driest and sunniest months. Winter camping is possible at year-round sites, but freezing nights and occasional snow are routine from December through February.

Access on the park's north side depends on the Green River Ferry. When the ferry is running, the drive from the Mammoth Cave Visitor Center to Maple Springs Group - Mammoth Cave National Park takes about 15 minutes; when it is closed for low water or high water, the detour becomes an hour or more each way. Ferry vehicles are limited to 8 tons and 16 feet in length, so larger RVs and horse trailers must use the alternate route through Brownsville. Hookups are limited. Maple Springs has electric and water at some sites but no sewer. Nolin Lake State Park has 32 campsites with water and electricity, 20 primitive sites, a restroom and shower building, laundry facilities, and a dump station. Cell coverage is spotty in the park interior, and Kentucky campground sites can be occupied by a maximum of 8 people, with 4 adults and children 16 and under included in the base rate; additional adults are charged per night upon arrival.
