Rose Island was a 1920s amusement park with a small zoo, pony rides, merry-go-round, Ferris wheel, roller coaster, and swimming pool, damaged beyond repair by the 1937 Flood, and today reached across the historic Portersville Bridge. At Clifty Falls, hikers can chase four waterfalls, with Tunnel Falls the tallest, though trails leading to them are rugged.

The camping season around Buckner is long but not truly year-round for every property. The camping season typically runs from March through November, though several Louisville-area private campgrounds remain open across the calendar. Private parks such as Louisville North Campground generally stay open all year, while amenities at state parks scale back in the cold months. Clifty Falls campground operates year-round, with winter camping available at reduced service including one family restroom and limited water access in the non-electric loop. Camp store and laundry facilities run seasonally in the warmer months. Charlestown State Park runs a similar seasonal pattern, with pools and nature programs concentrated in the warm months. Demand spikes are sharp and predictable. Peak RV season runs from late spring through early fall, with the biggest surge around the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, and sites at Louisville North Campground and other close-in parks fill months in advance for Derby weekend. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and October foliage weekends can also sell out well ahead.

Sites near Buckner range from tight urban-adjacent parks to spacious state park loops. Private parks in the area lean toward full hookups, pull-through sites, and paved or gravel pads suited to larger rigs, while state park loops mix electric-only and non-electric sites with fire rings and bathhouses. Charlestown State Park has an extremely popular campground with 132 electric sites, including 60 full hookups, plus modern comfort stations. Clifty Falls skews open and sunny, with the campground split between electric and non-electric sections and many sites positioned in open areas that receive direct sun most of the day. A few practical notes for planning. Only one vehicle is permitted at each Charlestown campsite, with additional vehicles required to use the overflow parking lot. Driving an RV in Louisville is straightforward on most routes, but tight downtown streets and low bridges are worth avoiding.
