Camping near Burkesville, Kentucky
Burkesville sits in south-central Kentucky along the Cumberland River, roughly 16 miles from the Kentucky shore of Dale Hollow Lake. The town works as a practical base for RV travelers targeting two waterways at once: the Cumberland River running through the county seat, and Dale Hollow Lake straddling the Kentucky-Tennessee border, with a 144-site campground, 60-room lodge, 18-hole championship golf course, and full-service marina at the state resort park.
Campground options range from in-town RV sites to full-service lake resorts and a state resort park. Banks of the Cumberland Campground sits inside Burkesville city limits with river access and walk-to restaurants. Sulphur Creek Resort and Dale Hollow Paradise put campers on the lake for boating and houseboat rentals, while Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park offers a lakeside campground, lodge, marina, and golf course on the Frogue Peninsula. McDermit RV Park rounds out the choices for travelers wanting a simpler hookup stop.
Cumberland County roads are rural and winding. Larger rigs should map routes in advance, particularly for lake-access campgrounds, which are reached by state highways rather than interstates.
Things to do around Burkesville
Water dominates the itinerary. Dale Hollow Lake is known for smallmouth bass, walleye, and trout fishing, plus water skiing, tubing, and swimming in exceptionally clear water. Marinas at Sulphur Creek Resort and Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park rent pontoons and houseboats for day or multi-day trips.
On the Cumberland River side, kayak, canoe, and tube rentals are available in Burkesville, and a paddling trail runs through Cumberland County. Wildlife watching includes deer, bald eagles, and songbirds along the river corridor.
On land, Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park has hiking trails, a swimming pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day, mini-golf, and an 18-hole championship golf course. Equestrian sites are available at the state park for travelers bringing horses, one of four equestrian campgrounds in the Kentucky State Parks system.

Peak RV season runs from late April through mid-October, when the lake and river are fully warmed and marinas run at full staffing. July and August bring the hottest, muggiest weather along with the highest booking demand. Reserve lakefront sites well in advance for summer weekends and holidays.
Spring and early fall are strong shoulder seasons. Wildflowers and cooler nights make April through May comfortable for hiking and fishing, though spring is also the wettest stretch, with heavy thunderstorms and occasional flooding along Cumberland River tributaries. September typically brings the driest, mildest weather of the year.
Winter is quiet. Kentucky State Parks keep campgrounds open year-round but cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should call the park before arriving between December and February. Late October through November can also bring ladybug swarms on warm days, an issue campers frequently report at lakeside sites.
How to book a campsite
Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park takes reservations through the Kentucky State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, with sites bookable up to 12 months in advance and required at least 1 day ahead of arrival. Sites accommodate a maximum of 8 occupants and 2 units per site. There is a one-night minimum stay during the week at all parks, and Friday or Saturday arrivals require a two-night minimum.
Private campgrounds book directly. Banks of the Cumberland Campground, Sulphur Creek Resort, Dale Hollow Paradise, and McDermit RV Park each take reservations through their own websites or by phone, and lakefront resorts strongly recommend booking early for summer and holiday stays.
For peak-summer lakefront sites at any of the resorts, plan to book several months out. Shoulder-season and weekday stays are usually available closer to the travel date.
What to expect on the ground
Most area campgrounds offer 30- and 50-amp electric with water hookups. Full sewer is less common at lake resorts, so plan for dump-station stops. The state park campground is not directly on or in view of Dale Hollow Lake; access to the lake is approximately 2 miles from the campground entrance at the marina.
Cell service is uneven in the hollows around Dale Hollow. Download maps and reservations before leaving town. Grocery, fuel, and restaurants are concentrated in Burkesville proper; lake-area resorts have small camp stores but limited selection.
Roads to lake campgrounds involve rural two-lanes with grades and tight turns. The Kentucky Department of Parks permits the use of non-licensed vehicles in campgrounds, including golf carts, only by those individuals with a disability. Parks also prohibits the importation of firewood from any state outside of Kentucky, to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Burkesville, KY
How much does an RV rental in Burkesville, KY cost, and how can I save?
RV rental in Burkesville, KY is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Cumberland River and Dale Hollow Lake. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, while Class C motorhomes generally run $175 to $275 per night, depending on size, season, and amenities. For a cheap RV rental in Burkesville, book midweek (Sunday through Thursday), avoid the River Festivus weekend in mid-August, and choose a travel trailer if you already have a tow vehicle. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Burkesville%2C%20KentuckyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Burkesville, Kentucky?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Burkesville, Kentucky. Kentucky does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans under 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and virtually every RV on RVezy falls well under that threshold. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home country license and you are set to roll toward Dale Hollow Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance come with my Burkesville RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Burkesville, KY through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Highway 90 heading to Dale Hollow Lake or need a jump start at Veterans Memorial Park, help is one phone call away. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle and gives you serious peace of mind. During checkout you choose between protection tiers based on the coverage level you want, and the guest selects the plan, not the host. First-time renters love this: you can hit those winding Cumberland County backroads knowing you have a safety net.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Burkesville RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you confirm, so you have breathing room if plans shift. Beyond that, your refund depends on factors like how far out from your trip you cancel and whether an unexpected event such as severe weather affects your dates. The full cancellation terms are shown at checkout before you confirm, so you always know exactly where you stand before booking your Burkesville RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Burkesville RV trip?
Absolutely, and Burkesville is a fantastic spot for it. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Burkesville on RVezy, so toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on your search to see rigs that welcome your four-legged co-pilot. Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park allows leashed pets in the campground, and the local Alpine Hill area near downtown Burkesville is a great place to stretch four legs and two. Pro tip: message the host directly through the listing to share your pet's size and breed. Some charge a small pet fee, and many will leave extra towels for those post-lake swims.
parks.ky.gov/explore/dale-hollow-lake-state-resort-park-7787Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Burkesville?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to start your trip. RV delivery in Burkesville is offered by many RVezy hosts, who can tow or drive your motorhome rental in Burkesville straight to Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park or a nearby private campground, then level the rig, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system. This is perfect if it is your first time renting an RV or if you flew into Nashville International Airport (about two hours south) without a tow vehicle. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who serve Cumberland County, and confirm any per-mile delivery fees with the host before booking.
parks.ky.gov/explore/dale-hollow-lake-state-resort-park-7787How does mileage work, and how far can I realistically travel?
You've got options. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, and you'll see exactly what's included on every listing — many offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a Burkesville RV trip. From Burkesville, Dale Hollow Lake is just 16 miles south, Lake Cumberland is about 45 miles east, Mammoth Cave National Park sits around 75 miles west, Nashville is roughly 110 miles south, and Louisville is about 140 miles north. If you're planning a bigger loop, filter for unlimited mileage listings or message hosts to negotiate a higher mileage package up front.
nps.gov/maca/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Burkesville for an RV stay?
The best campgrounds near Burkesville include Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park (a 144-site campground with electric and water hookups on a 28,000-acre lake famous for smallmouth bass), private RV parks along Highway 61 such as Do Drop In RV Campground, and lakeside options near the state park. For RV camping in Burkesville closer to town, you will also find small private parks along the Cumberland River. Pro tip: state park sites at Dale Hollow are reservable up to 12 months ahead through Reserve America and book solid for summer weekends.
kentuckystateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/dale-hollow-lake-state-resort-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=KY&parkId=91916When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Burkesville, KY?
Burkesville shines from late April through October, and each season offers something different. Spring (April to May) brings highs in the 60s to 70s and wildflowers along the Cumberland River. Summer (June to August) runs 85 to 90 degrees with warm river days, prime smallmouth bass fishing, and the famous River Festivus the third weekend of August. Fall (September to October) is the local insider favorite: 60s to 70s, fiery foliage in the rolling hills, plus community events along the Cumberland River. Winter dips into the 30s and 40s with occasional snow, but eagle watching around Dale Hollow Lake from December through February is incredible. For the sweet spot, target the second half of September.
weather.gov/lmk/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to figure it out?
Yes, and you'll feel like a pro by the end of day one. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water and waste tanks, propane, and how to level the rig at your Dale Hollow Lake site. You can also message the host before booking with any questions about driving a motorhome through Burkesville's hilly two-lane roads. Most first-time renters in Cumberland County choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer because they drive like an oversized truck. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick video walkthrough of dump-station procedures the day before you head home.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/cmv-driving-tips-driver-fatigueWhat happens if something breaks down during my RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat tire on Highway 61, a dead battery at your campground, or run out of fuel on the way to Dale Hollow Marina, one call connects you with help. For mechanical or systems issues (think AC trouble, fridge not cooling, slide-out stuck), message your host directly, since they know their rig best and can usually troubleshoot in minutes. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip, so your Burkesville RV trip stays relaxed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat road trip routes are popular from Burkesville, KY?

Another favorite runs east about 45 miles to Lake Cumberland State Resort Park for houseboat country, or 75 miles west to Mammoth Cave National Park for the world's longest cave system. Nashville is roughly 110 miles south for music and BBQ, and Louisville sits about 140 miles north for bourbon country. Cross-state travel between Kentucky and Tennessee is straightforward and standard with your RVezy rental. Travel into Mexico is not permitted, and Canada trips require host approval in advance.
nps.gov/maca/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Burkesville RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's predictable. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG towing). Kentucky gas prices generally run a few cents below the national average, and you'll find stations in Burkesville on Highway 90 and at the junction with Highway 61. For a typical 4-night trip with 250 miles of driving in a Class C, budget roughly $100 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Burkesville before heading to Dale Hollow, as lake-area stations can be 20 to 30 cents pricier per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground in Burkesville?
Earlier is better, but you have flexibility. Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park accepts reservations up to 12 months in advance through Reserve America, and summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) plus the River Festivus weekend in mid-August often fill up two to four months out. Private campgrounds in the area typically book directly through their websites or by phone, and you can often find a site within a week or two of your trip outside peak season. Pro tip: for shoulder-season trips in late September or early October, you can usually book just 7 to 14 days ahead and still land a great lakefront spot.
kentuckystateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/dale-hollow-lake-state-resort-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=KY&parkId=91916What are the local driving conditions like around Burkesville?

Burkesville sits in the rolling Appalachian foothills, so expect winding two-lane roads (Highways 61, 90, and 449) with some grades heading toward Dale Hollow Lake. Speed limits are typically 35 to 55 mph through Cumberland County, and you'll share the road with the occasional tractor or hay truck. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially along Hegira Road and the routes near the state park. The roads are paved and well-maintained year round, but winter ice storms (rare but real) can make hills tricky in January and February. Pro tip: avoid driving big rigs after dark on backroads.

Private campgrounds along Highway 61 typically offer 50/30 amp electric, water, and Wi-Fi. Pro tip: bring an extra 25-foot power cord and a water pressure regulator, since utility hookups can sit farther from the pad than expected.

Many hosts include linens, pots and pans, coffee makers, outdoor chairs, and a starter kit of paper goods. Generators are common on Class A and Class C motorhomes, and some rigs include onboard Wi-Fi or a TV. Filter on RVezy by Sleeps count and check each listing's amenity list, since hosts spell out exactly what is included.

Delivery is available from many hosts straight to Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park or your private campground. Mileage policies and add-on fees are listed clearly on every listing, and you can message the host to confirm pickup logistics before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Burkesville%2C%20KentuckyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple, transparent, and fully online. You pay for your Burkesville RV rental securely through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never cash to the host. Hosts also place a refundable security deposit hold on your card before your trip starts (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), which is released back to you after return assuming no damage. To keep things smooth: take time-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and return, follow the host's mileage and fuel return policy, and report any concerns through the RVezy message thread so everything is documented.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a family RV trip to Burkesville a good idea for kids?
It is one of the best family RV trip Burkesville destinations in Kentucky. Dale Hollow Lake is famous for kid-friendly swimming, with an outdoor pool at the state park (open Memorial Day through Labor Day) and a top-rated 18-hole golf course for the grown-ups. Kids love the marina (boat and paddleboard rentals), hiking trails for spotting bald eagles in winter, and catching their first smallmouth bass on the Cumberland River. In town, Burkesville's riverside park and Veterans Memorial Park host community events throughout the summer. Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome with bunks. Kids love having their own loft, and you will appreciate the separate sleeping space.
